Genesis 48

THE WAY OF FLEE TOWARD BLESSING

( Gen 28:10-22)

Introduction:

Today's text is about Jacob who left home and was on his way to his uncle's house. Jacob, holding on to the blood covenant of his father Isaac,

met God at Bethel. Let's think about what that meeting meant to Jacob and what God is saying to us through these words. Jacob's departure from

his father and mother marks the beginning of his independent covenant journey.

The greatest conflict is conflict between spiritual and physical. If this conflict arise in family it become bigger problem. Jacob who snatch away Esau’s blessing face death. Jacob feels death so flee from his brother and go to Haran. He was tired and slept on the stone. At that night God appeared to Jacob.

1. The Jehovah God appeared to Jacob.

  1) To tired Jacob(Gen.28:11)

  2) God appeared in Jacob’s dream. (Gen.28:12)

    v. 12 He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and                     descending on it.

  3) Jacob saw a stairway. (Gen.28:12)

  4) Jacob saw the angels of God.(Gen.28:12)

  5) Jacob saw the Lord who is speaking to him.(Gen.28:13)

      v. 13 There above it stood the LORD, and he said: "I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your                       descendants the land on which you are lying.

2. The covenant of the Lord.

  1) God of promise.(Gen.28:13)

  2) God of evidence.(Gen.28:14)  Descendants and all people

  3) God said I have done what I have promised you.(Gen.28:15)

3. Jacob’s realization.

  1) Tribulation is the way to meet God.

  2) Tribulation is the way to receive blessing.

  3) God’s companion (Gen.28:16)

     v. 16 When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, "Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was not aware of it."

  4) House of God, Gate of heaven. (Gen.28:17)

     v. 17 He was afraid and said, "How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven."

4. Jacob’s vow

  1) Stone pillar

  2) Poured oil.

  3) Bethel

  4) Testimony to God (Gen.28:21)

      v. 21 so that I return safely to my father's house, then the LORD will be my God

  5) God’s Temple

  6) Tithing

God said he would be with him, protect him, and let him return in peace. Simply put, God promised to be Jacob's God. Regarding the promise,

Jacob makes a vow that this place will be a place of worship and that he will give God a tenth of everything he has.

Bethel changed Jacob. Jacob before Bethel and Jacob after Bethel are different. Jacob, who met God at Bethel, changed. It changes when you meet God.

It is a distinction between the past and the future. Jacob changes from a fugitive to a worshiper. After meeting God at Bethel, the person who was running away to save his life realized that God was with him, held on to the covenant, and became a person who accompanied and worshiped the Lord.
