The Fundamental Things Everyone Must Know
The other day, I was watching the news on YouTube and found myself in a state of bewilderment. The true colors of political groups attempting to abolish the word "Christmas" are evident. Hosea 4:6 states, "My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge." This refers to the core of the Old Testament concerning knowledge of God the Creator, who I was, what the fundamental problem is, and what the only solution is. In this way, the New Testament is built upon the foundation of the Old Testament, forming the content of the Gospel and the basis of evangelism and missions.
1. What everyone must learn first is the book of Genesis in the Bible.
What people must know first are Genesis chapters 1-3. Genesis chapter 1 describes God's creation of the universe, all things, and humanity. Genesis chapter 2 describes the original essence of humanity, the Garden of Eden given, the covenant to be kept, and the mission entrusted. Humanity, created in the image of God who is Spirit, is an eternal being fashioned from the dust of the ground with a body, a living soul receiving God's breath, and a spirit built as a Holy of Holies where God's Holy Spirit dwells, clinging to God's Word. Adam was given the mission to uphold the covenant of creation, build the Garden of Eden, and entrust it to future generations to operate.
Adam's first test in Genesis chapter 3 was to not be deceived by the devil's lies, but to rule over and conquer the devil. However, he was deceived by the devil, clung to the devil's lies, violated God's first covenant, and rebelled against God. The result was a sentence of eternal punishment of hell and becoming a slave to the devil. Nevertheless, God loved Adam and all people in him, and established a new covenant to save them through Christ, the descendant of the woman. All remaining Old Testament Scriptures consist of narratives of offering blood sacrifices as a confession of faith in the new covenant, running the journey of the covenant.
2. The purpose of life is to receive salvation by accepting Christ as your Lord and Savior.
Apostle Paul clearly proclaimed to Timothy and his family that Jesus is the Christ, and Timothy and his family accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, gaining new life and being discipled through Paul to walk the path of discipleship. Paul encouraged Timothy to learn God's Word above all else and to remain in the conviction of that Word. "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work" (2 Timothy 3:16-17, NIV).
For humans, who were slaves to the devil, to become thoroughly equipped as God's people means to be united with Jesus Christ. If I truly desire to be one body with Jesus Christ, who is the Head, I must receive the given Word and enter into a life of meditating on it day and night. I must delight in the Word day and night and meditate on it so that it governs my heart and mind. To "continue" in what you have learned and become convinced of means to remain in that state. At that time, many believers abandoned the true Gospel and reverted to their old, self-centered ways. Therefore, Paul advises them to continue in what they have learned and become convinced of, and to live a life united only with Christ.
3. Humans are beings who live by God's Word.
The most basic spiritual science is, first, that the soul (heart, mind) of a person who violated the first covenant and rebelled against God must accept Christ, the new covenant, as his Lord and Savior to be pardoned, restored, and reborn into new life. Second, a person of Christ reborn into new life can only grow by continuously feeding on the nourishment of God's Word. One must hold fast to the given Word, chew on it all day long, and meditate on it so that the Word governs them. Otherwise, they will be dominated by the world's values that have been ingrained in them from before and will inevitably live according to this world. The Bible makes God's people thoroughly equipped. "Thoroughly equipped" means being united with Jesus Christ, who is the Head. Furthermore, it equips them for every good work (evangelism and missions). Therefore, one must continue in what they have learned and become convinced of, and not waver even slightly.
The given God's Word is the 66 books of the Bible. All Scripture is God-breathed. Although it is a book recorded through about 40 human authors, God breathed life into it, making it the living Word of God. God used the biblical writers as living pens to record this book. The evidence that the Bible was recorded by God's inspiration lies in its unity. The Bible was recorded by about 40 different authors over approximately 1600 years. However, the Bible consistently records Christ, the truth of salvation, about who God is, what kind of beings humans are, and how sinful humans can obtain salvation.
The eras in which the Bible was recorded were completely different, and the knowledge, personalities, and experiences of the people who recorded it were completely different. That such a unified theme and truth of salvation are recorded is because the biblical authors received and recorded the Word given by God. Therefore, the original author of the Bible is God Himself. Thus, the Bible is indeed God's Word and possesses absolute authority. What differentiates the Bible from other books is that God still speaks currently to those who read it. Therefore, for us, who have become Christ's people, to grow to the full measure of Christ, we must continuously receive the Word from the church pulpit we serve, meditate on it, and listen to God's voice.
