To Truly Enjoy a Blessed New Year, We Must Break Free From “Self-Centeredness.”
After the American Civil War ended, two soldiers were returning home. Their hearts filled with joy at returning home, they quickened their steps, just cresting the hill of their hometown. Then, their eyes fell upon a small church on the hill, where they had diligently attended since childhood. One soldier suggested to the other, “Let’s go into the church for a moment and offer a prayer of thanks.” But the other soldier replied, “What church? Let’s go for a drink.” Decades passed, and the soldier who suggested going for a drink became an alcoholic and ended up in prison. One day, he picked up a newspaper distributed in prison and was startled. The article he read that day announced the election of the 22nd President of the United States, “Cleveland.” This Cleveland was the friend who had gone off to the Civil War decades earlier and returned home with him. A moment's choice dictates a lifetime. Minor decisions can sometimes determine destiny. Moment by moment in life, we must carefully choose what to abandon and what to select.
1. 'Self-centered' people are bound by money-centeredness and success-centeredness, and are dragged along.
Almost all people in the world are trapped in 'self-ness', tightly bound by self-centeredness and money-centeredness, and are being dragged into eternal perdition. Originally, humans were the highest beings, created in the image of God and at God's level. However, deceived by the devil, they misused their free will, broke the covenant of creation, and rebelled against God, wanting to be like God themselves. As a result, they were sentenced to eternal hellfire, degenerated to the level of beasts, and became slaves to the evil devil (Genesis 3, John 8:44, Romans 3:23). This is called the original sin of all humanity.
Nevertheless, God loved all humanity and established the 'covenant of Christ' (Genesis 3:15, all Scripture) so that they could be saved and restore the image of God. Since then, humanity has been given the opportunity to live their physical lives within a destined period and region, and to be saved. Each person, using their given free will during this period, has been divided into two groups: those who believe the covenant of Christ and are saved, and those who do not believe and are dragged into eternal hellfire.
2. Even Jesus’ brothers did not believe before the resurrection.
Jesus’ brothers did not believe that Jesus was the Christ because they had lived with Him since childhood. However, only after their brother, Jesus, was crucified and died and rose again on the third day, did they believe that Jesus was the Christ, and as founding members of the early church, they risked their lives, gathered in the Upper Room, and entered a life filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:14). Among Jesus’ physical brothers, James became a leader of the early church, served, and left behind the book of James. They were the people who had observed and lived closest to Jesus Christ, who came incarnate on this earth, for the longest time. When those who believed in Jesus as Christ and became members of the early church were scattered in various places due to persecution and hardship, James wrote and sent the book of James to them, serving precious in helping them to firmly maintain their faith and be victorious.
Compared to the early church believers, modern church members today seem to waver a lot in their faith life and live deceived, despite not facing many difficulties. It seems that most, even while attending church, fail to break free from self-centeredness, receive God's Word in a self-centered way, and often pray according to their own thoughts and desires, regardless of the promised Word. In this way, global Christianity, which is becoming increasingly ritualized, is bound by a corrupt world and cannot even properly gather for worship meetings.
3. God wants us to hold onto only the covenant of Christ.
If we live by welcoming 'Christ alone' as Lord and Savior, as God desires, we can be liberated from 'self-centeredness' and rise to God's level. That is why God allows various trials for us who believe. Therefore, James tells us, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds.” Everyone faces trials. But Christians must not be bound or deceived by trials. God gives trials to give us answers. However, if we claim to believe but approach trials from a self-centered perspective, we become bound. If we commit them to the Lord and hold onto the given Word, we become Christ-like and can experience the power of the throne and responses that transcend time and space.
There is always an answer within a problem. The Word to "consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds" may not be immediately understandable. However, if we think from God's perspective, who allowed the trials, it means we can rejoice and give thanks, expecting the answer that follows the trials. This is because trials are given to provide answers. Generally, when people face trials, they complain, grumble, blame others, and fall deeply into the trial. But believers in the Lord, when trials come, should entrust them to the Lord, hold onto the Word given by the Lord, and seek the answer.
God raises us through trials. He allows us to experience that only Jesus is the Christ in any situation and establishes us as those who answer, “Only Christ!” Job, who endured many trials, confessed in Job 23:10, “But he knows the way that I take; when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold.” No matter what ordeal we face, we must entrust it to the Lord and give thanks, looking forward to the blessing of becoming like pure gold. Breaking free from self-centeredness and becoming Christ-centered is the primary goal of faith life. For this, God allows various trials. It is when we can consider it pure joy when facing various trials that our faith grows. It is said, “suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” Although these are difficult times, I hope you will give thanks and be established as complete people of God, whom God is shaping.
