The Difference Between Those Who Belong to the Flesh and Those Who Belong to the Spirit (1 Timothy 2:8–15)

Scripture divides people into those who belong to the spirit and those who belong to the flesh. Human beings were originally created in the image of God (the house of God), and their souls (heart, mind, thoughts) were meant to belong to God and to be with God by holding to the first covenant (Genesis 1:1–2:17). But by holding to the devil’s lie, they broke the first covenant, rebelled against God, and became those who belong to the devil, receiving the sentence of eternal punishment in hell. This event is called original sin (Romans 3:23). Even so, God loved us and established a new covenant, promising that He would save us through the Christ, the offspring of the virgin (Genesis 3:15). From that time on, every person born of Adam, with his or her own soul enthroning the flesh as an idol and becoming a slave of the devil, lives out a time-limited life just once as a suspended sentence period before the execution of eternal punishment in hell. During this period, if a person repents of his sins and receives Christ of the new covenant as Lord and Savior, he is given the opportunity to be pardoned from eternal punishment in hell and restored as a child of God.

1. A person who believes the new covenant and receives Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior belongs to the spirit.

A believer who has received Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior now belongs to the Holy Spirit and, in the Lord, has become a royal priest, a mediator between God and the world (1 Peter 2:9). As mediators, we have become those who, wherever we are, break the forces of darkness with kingly authority without anger and disputing, and lift up holy hands as priests to pray to God. If we are in a state of resenting or hating someone, that is the result of being bound by the flesh and the world. We must quickly come before the Lord, entrust ourselves to Him, and commit our hearts and minds to be guarded by the Lord.

In every age, the forces of darkness have tried to block the gospel and prayer. Many believers in the early church, too, were often swept up into anger toward those above them and into quarrels with rivals around them, thus losing the blessing and authority of mediators. That is why Scripture tells us not to be deceived, but to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or disputing. When believers, deceived by various hardships, return to the former state of those who belong to the flesh, they become tied to fleshly categories—male and female, young and old, rich and poor, high and low—and can only fall into anger and quarrels.

2. We must not be deceived by the schemes of darkness that try to drag us down into those who belong to the flesh.

If we view our present circumstances by the value standards of the world, we will be deceived. Joseph, who was sold as a slave, was not deceived. Daniel and his three friends, who were taken as captives, were not deceived either. Joseph became prime minister of Egypt and was used preciously for world evangelization, and Daniel became prime minister of Babylon, serving four kings and proclaiming the gospel, the new covenant given by God. Peter and Paul also suffered persecution from Roman emperors, yet they used them to accomplish the evangelization of Rome.

There is no reason to be deceived by any kind of hardship, by leftist regimes or communist dictatorships, or by any surrounding situation. A person who has received Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior has become one who belongs to the spirit, a royal priest who is always with the Triune God. There is no need to struggle to overcome difficult situations around us by our own efforts. If we become those who belong wholly to God, consistent with our saved status, and entrust everything to Him in prayer and live as those who belong to God’s Spirit, all things will work together for good.

3. In the Lord, the very expression “non-discrimination” is the most foolish phrase.

Just as chopsticks and spoons, which people make, have different functions, so all created things that God has made are different from one another and each has its own unique function and characteristics. God made them, and God is the owner, yet each person tries to seize much of what belongs to God and act as if he or she were the owner; is that not why there is so much trouble and strife? For example, conception, childbirth, and childrearing are the duty and privilege of women and the most blessed ministry given to them. But can a woman become a man and a man become a woman simply because someone cries out, “I don’t want to be a woman. I’m going to become a man,” and undergoes sex-change surgery? Even Mencius taught, “Those who follow Heaven’s will are preserved; those who oppose Heaven’s will perish” (順天者 存 逆天者 亡).

A child conceived between parents who have become those who belong to the spirit and have found their answer in the gospel can be raised as a child like Samuel. A child conceived through parents who hold to God’s new covenant can participate in the life of faith in the womb together with the mother. After birth, if that child is raised like Moses, he or she will be set apart as a precious person of God and become the parents’ eternal reward.

Conclusion: People must escape from a self-centered life, become those who belong to the spirit, and lift up holy hands.

Wherever people shout “non-discrimination” while harboring anger and strife, there can be no unity or harmony. God has made each person different, a unique and irreplaceable being. Hands and feet are different, and eyes and ears are different, yet if they respect and serve one another, they can all enjoy peace, stability, and joy together.

In 1 Timothy we see that, in connection with women in the Ephesian church influenced by the temple of Artemis who wanted to teach and dominate men, Paul states that such a structure of discrimination is not permitted. This is because the gospel does not permit discrimination between men and women. The passage in 1 Timothy 2 rejects a certain Gnostic teaching that, as a result of Eve committing a greater sin than Adam, women were given the curse of childbirth and must escape the curse of childbirth in order to be saved. Rather, as for everyone, so also for women, they are saved by remaining in faith, love, and holiness with propriety, and through “conception, childbirth, and childrearing” they are used preciously as coworkers in the work of salvation. I bless each of you to belong to the Creator God and to enjoy and unfold the very highest blessing.
