Fight the Battle Against Yourself, Who Has Become Your Own Master. (1 Timothy 6:11-16)
The Bible commands us believers to fight the good fight of faith. The good fight of faith is, first, to nail to the cross each day the self that has illegally taken possession of oneself, who belongs to God, and is acting as its own master. Second, it is to receive Jesus Christ, who has solved all problems including original sin, through which we rebelled against God together with Adam, and who knocks on the door of each person’s heart. (Revelation 3:20) Such a person is called by the Bible “a person of God.” However, it seems that most Christians do not regard themselves as people of God, but rather, many regard God as “my God” in a self-centered way. If God-centered Christianity degenerates into a self-centered religion, it has nothing to do with salvation. The Word in 1 Timothy 6:12 that says to fight the good fight of the faith and take hold of eternal life is a command given to each Christian who can easily become religious.
1. What kind of fight is the good fight of faith?
By God’s grace, we received Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, were saved, and became people belonging to the Holy Spirit. However, in the state of our soul, the unbelief of being self-centered, money-centered, and success-centered, which we had when we formerly lived according to the flesh, still remains. Therefore, in order to keep our center in a state of belonging to the Holy Spirit, we must fight the battle of fixing our attention on the Lord twenty-four hours a day.
The apostle Paul had already exhorted in 1 Timothy 1:18, “according to the prophecies once made about you, so that by recalling them you may fight the battle well.” This means that the root of the battle is to hold to the Word that has been given, meditate on it like Psalm 1, and hold on to it. Jesus also fought against the devil only with the Word of God. (Matthew 4:1-11)
We must continue to maintain the state of the soul that has received Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. If we lose the life of faith in which we receive and follow the Holy Spirit of the Lord, we lose everything. No Christian must stop making the effort to keep the faith until they receive the crown of righteousness from the Lord.
2. What is the meaning of the Word to take hold of eternal life?
1 Timothy 6:12 says to fight the good fight of faith in order to take hold of eternal life. It is the Word telling us to live a victorious life in which our soul is no longer belonging to the flesh, but enjoys the state of being one with the Lord and takes hold of complete eternal life. Eternal life is receiving the Lord Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, following Him, and becoming one with Him. Eternal life is living as the temple of the Holy Spirit of the Lord and bearing the fruit of the Spirit. Eternal life is bearing the fruit of righteousness, godliness, and holiness in our character and life through God’s Word. Eternal life is following the Lord, growing until we reach the mature measure of the Lord, and becoming a complete soul of the Lord.
Jesus said in John 17:3, “Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” Here, to know means becoming one. It means being re-created from the original state of the image of God into the upgraded image of Christ. There are many foolish, false, and evil forces that try to drag us back down into being people belonging to the flesh so that we cannot take hold of eternal life. I hope you will become warriors of faith who fight against these forces, keep the faith, and take hold of eternal life.
3. There are things believers must flee and things they must pursue.
We people of God are commanded to certainly flee self-centeredness, money-centeredness, empty arguments, and the desire to become rich. This is because if we draw near to them, we will be seized by them as before. It means that we must constantly focus and fix our thoughts and eyes on Christ. The things we people of God must pursue are righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, and gentleness. Though it speaks of six virtues, in one phrase, it means to follow only the Lord Jesus Christ. This is the purpose for which God chose and saved us.
If we are victorious in this good fight of faith, we can take hold of eternal life. Here, Paul speaks of eternal life as the reward obtained by the one who is victorious in this good fight. The word “take hold” here is used with a very strong meaning. It does not mean merely possessing it, but being in a state of firmly holding to it and enjoying it. Because most church members are interested in the things of the world, they are not moved by the fact that they possess eternal life. People who live to please the Lord are those who enjoy eternal life in Christ and receive it with deep thanksgiving.
The road to the heavenly city is the road we walk while fighting this battle. The day after we finish the life given to each of us and fall asleep can be seen as the day our Lord Jesus Christ returns. When you finish the physical life given to you and see the Lord, may you be praised with the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant!” John Bunyan’s “The Pilgrim’s Progress” is about the good fight of faith that a Christian experiences while going toward the heavenly city. The main object of the fight is the battle against “oneself.” In that sense, each day of our Christian life can perhaps be called a life lived while fighting this good fight. May you be victorious together with the Lord, who is always with you.
