[English Transcript]

God’s time is, focusing on the message from Luke 15:1-10, we are sharing a message titled "God's Joy." The Jews were considered a precious people chosen long ago, including Abraham. But their spiritual problem was their stiffness and arrogance; that was a big spiritual problem. They should have been most grateful, joyful, and humble to serve God once they were chosen by Him, but they didn't know that. They regarded themselves as the only ones saved, and all other nations in the world as people who would all perish. God spoke through many prophets, warned them, and spoke again, but they still couldn't understand. They are such serious people that I sometimes think that the day they finally realize it might be the day of the Lord's Second Coming.

Looking at verses 1 and 2 of today's text, within the Jewish society of that time, there were people who formed extremes among themselves. The people at the very top were, of course, the religious leaders—the Pharisees and the scribes—and at the very bottom were the tax collectors and sinners. The Pharisees and the scribes at the top considered themselves to be of heaven, while the tax collectors and sinners were regarded as people of the earth. The Pharisees were people who claimed to strictly follow the Jewish law literally. Contrary to this, there was a group that could not even enter the Jerusalem temple or local synagogues and were shunned. They were called "people of the land" as a term of contempt—meaning they were "things of the earth," and the term "sinners" was used as a pronoun for people like tax collectors and prostitutes. "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God," and since all people rebelled against God and were sentenced to eternal hell, God decided to save them through Christ, and establishing the covenant of Christ is the core of the Bible. The law is what they call a "tutor" that leads us to Christ, showing us that we cannot do it without Christ. The Pharisees used the law to judge others, claiming they were holy and others were not, creating this divide. They are truly frustrating figures in God's eyes. First, we must understand the difference between the law and the gospel.

The tax collectors, whom the Pharisees judged and hated so much, were regarded as puppets of the oppressive Roman Empire who extorted various taxes from their fellow Jews and offered them up. The Roman government collected taxes from every citizen to manage the administration, military, and all these things, and to collect taxes from subject peoples smoothly, they placed tax collection managers in each country. They collected taxes through local contractors in each region, and they were the tax collectors. Even today, collecting taxes is not an easy job, so the state exerts force to collect taxes. In addition to the fixed amount paid to the Roman government through the manager, a significant amount was left over, which they used for customs expenses or other necessary expenses, allowing them to accumulate great wealth. At that time, Jews were money-oriented, so they considered those tax collectors, who took away their money, even worse than organized criminals. Therefore, the Pharisees avoided any transaction with these "things of the earth" and regarded it as a taboo to have any relationship with them. For example, marriage with tax collectors or such people of the earth was forbidden, they could not travel with them, and sitting together at meals or banquets was considered defiling. The Pharisees judged others by the law and did not consider them neighbors. Those in high positions, politicians, and their families show a side of not dealing with these poor people at all. Yet, they speak well, pretending to be for the people, talking about the country and politics for the people. They actually do not step in with their bodies. In an even more evil situation than that, they were displeased that Jesus, a carpenter from Nazareth who claimed to be the Christ, was getting along with those "things of the earth"—the outcasts. In Luke 5:31-32, He said, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance."

Secondly, all these "people of the earth," these sinners, lived with walls built against the Pharisees, scribes, and synagogue leaders, but they flocked to Jesus in droves to hear the gospel. All these tax collectors and sinners, all these people of the earth, are people who need the gospel. They were people who could not even get close to the big churches or village halls that those considered "things of the earth" could never even imagine. These people called "things of the earth" flocked to Jesus. In verse 2, the Pharisees and scribes complained, saying, "This man receives sinners and eats with them," and grumbled. The word "complain" used here is a word used in the case of those who grumbled loudly against God and Moses during the 40 years of wilderness life at the time of the Exodus. So, these Pharisees, not knowing that they were the bigger sinners, slandered and grumbled because it was unacceptable for Jesus to receive these "things of the earth"—these sinners—and become friends with them, eating and drinking together. In this situation, the Lord told three parables in Luke 15. Today, I will talk about the parable of the lost sheep and the lost drachma, and next time, I will talk about the parable of the prodigal son.

Even today, many Christians often look at and talk about people around them from the perspective of the Pharisees and scribes in the text. Everyone is a sinner. The purpose of giving us life, these terrible sinners, is to let us live once so that He can save us. While preparing the message, I made a big mistake this week while looking at God. Nowadays, there are so many cars, so there are many people who value selling used cars as a business. Even a few years ago, when I was buying a used car, if someone awkward went, anyone at those used car dealerships would have their people rip them off and try to make a big profit. So this time, I didn't really need the car I had and the taxes were high, so I advertised it to sellers through a service to sell it. I made a contract as if I could sell it smoothly, but strangely, from there it started to get tangled, and I discovered that they were mobilizing their expertise to cut the price and try to take a profit. It was the same thing I had suffered at the Bucheon used car center in the past. This time, I also had thoughts like "are those bad guys?" like the Pharisees, and I couldn't treat them nicely. Even if I lose money, I should be in a state where I can pray for them, like Stephen, even if I have to be stoned to death when I have done no wrong. I didn't reach the level of Stephen, who prayed for those who were throwing stones while he was dying. I didn't even go that far, I only prepared to throw stones, but I also started to have murderous intent toward them. So, in the end, I sold it cheaply and handed it over, but all last night, I knelt before God and repented for that. Like this, we are often caught in our own selfishness, centered on various gains and losses. If that happens, I cannot live as a witness of Christ to the people assigned to me for evangelism.

Thirdly, among the two parables coming out today, the parable of the lost sheep and the drachma comes out. In verses 3 to 6, this parable appears. If they had 100 sheep at that time, they would have been quite wealthy. In the Judean region where pasture was extremely limited, it was common to gather village sheep together and graze them communally. Being the youngest son of a poor family, I would have participated in the village communal grazing while raising a few sheep at home. But if I were grazing 100 sheep, there would have been other shepherds, and they would have brought sheepdogs. Out of 100, one was lost. You might not know well, but sheep are extremely nearsighted and can only see about 6 meters ahead, and they are livestock that cannot see beyond that. Their claws aren't strong, their teeth aren't strong, and they don't have proper horns. So they are creatures that can easily be victimized by small predators. While grazing and smelling well, the sheep loses the whole flock and since it can't see beyond 10 or 20 meters, it loses its sense of direction. The sheep has no hope of survival. When those sheep move, wolves or various predators that can eat them circle around them. We humans who have left God are in the same kind of danger. In John 10:11-12, Jesus said, "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep. But a hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees. And the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them." That's what He said. So hirelings focus on how much they get paid per day. Unlike cow horns or hippo horns, sheep horns are different. Other animals' horns are for defense or attack, but these horns are bent like a circle. They are not for attack. Do you know how they use those horns? If they fall into a cliff-like place or fall into a difficult spot, the shepherd puts his shepherd's staff against the sheep and hooks it into the horns so that it is easy to pull the sheep up. We also live our lives in this situation, having left God and been caught in darkness. So if you hear the touch of Christ and the gospel of Christ, there is a heart in everyone to change this gospel. So I bless you in the name of the Lord that you may become not a hireling, but a good shepherd who can take good care of the Lord's sheep. Then the Lord values such a shepherd the most, provides for all their needs, and is with them. The shepherd in today's text is talking about the good shepherd who takes risks, risks his life, and finds the lost sheep until he finds it. So, are there any saints who started coming to church and then missed Sunday worship? Then, before that Sunday passes, you should go around, meet them, find out what happened, why they couldn't come, give them the word, and help them with what they need—that's a shepherd. In verse 7, it says, "I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance."

In the conclusion, let's look at the joy of the woman who found the drachma again. The drachma was a Greek silver coin at the time, which was the Roman era. It was a silver coin equivalent to a day's wage for an able-bodied man, like the Roman Denarius. Since one Denarius is a day's wage, in today's currency it would be about... [a certain amount]. Since silver does not change, it is estimated that the ten drachmas were silver coins given by an engaged man to his fiancée as a token. They would decorate their hair with it, wear it around their necks, and show it as a token that "I am engaged, a loved one gave this to me." The drachma was such a token. Even if it was one silver coin out of ten, to that woman, it must have been a very precious thing with a unique meaning like no other in the world. So she had to find this drachma in the whole house. Especially since Israeli houses at that time didn't have many windows and were dark, you had to turn on a light even during the day to search every nook and cranny. The room wasn't floored with linoleum or marble like it is these days, and it was a room with this and that piled up, so you had to look carefully one by one. Please imagine the woman's effort to find the lost drachma. God created each of us as the most precious existence. So God considers each lost person as a being more precious than the whole world. The parable in today's text shows God's love for finding the lost person at all costs. The conclusion of this parable is in verse 10. "I say to you, likewise, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents." So He is showing through the church today how happy He is when He finds such sinners. Conversely, the Jewish Pharisees and scribes, who claimed to be God's chosen people and were caught in self-righteousness, thought that it would be a joy in heaven if an evil sinner was wiped out. Simply put, they thought, "If that evil tax collector dies, God will be happy in heaven; if that governor or those Roman soldiers die, God will be happy in heaven." But the Lord's word is the exact opposite. Please remember that even today, there are many watchmen who think the exact opposite of the Lord. No matter how evil a politician or criminal may be, there are many people who applaud when they die a miserable death, but that shouldn't be the case. Whether they are very evil, a little evil, or seem good, it's all the same. "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God," and they are all caught in darkness. The purpose of life on this earth is not to become rich. It is not to take a high position. It is not to find a good job. What is it? In the place where I am, finding the lost drachma and the lost sheep is the important work. If so, I hope this is a time to look back at who the lost sheep and lost drachmas are around each of us. The sheep cannot find the shepherd on its own. The lost drachma cannot roll under the woman's feet on its own either. Therefore, the process of finding them is for the shepherd to go around the fields and go to dangerous places to find the lost sheep. The woman lights a lamp and diligently searches by sweeping and cleaning the house here and there. I hope you find the basic principles of the evangelism camp that the Lord is teaching here. A Korean person goes to the Philippines to do an evangelism camp—that is going to help the woman who lost the drachma in the Philippines, and it is going to help the shepherd who lost the sheep. The foundation of the Philippine camp is for the shepherd who needs to find the lost sheep to be the center. The woman who needs to find the drachma must be the center. But the evangelists who went from Korea or those in the Philippines don't even know where to go. They just walk around vaguely. Then they buy ice cream, go to the pool, and that's not a camp. They used the military term "camp," but I hope you remember that you and I, who are children of God, have become the army of Christ of God. There are sheep that we, as soldiers, must protect, and there are areas we must protect. Sheep are foolish animals. Even if you lose a cow while grazing on a mountain, the cow knows how to find its way home. Sheep do not know how to find their way home. The shepherd's heart is to search for the lost sheep while wandering through the dark path even after the sun sets. I bless you in the name of the Lord that you may find and guide the lost sheep among the sheep you are in charge of around you and participate in God's joy.

Father God, thank you for letting us know God's joy. Let us also participate in that joy of God. Let us be experts in finding lost sheep and lost drachmas. Thank you, Amen.

[Tagalog Transcript]

Salamat, Amen.
