1 Timothy 6:17-21 The True Purpose and Hope of Life
People must first know “Who am I?” in order to know “What should I live for?” Because all humanity is engaged in survival competition for “me,” without even knowing who that “me” is, for money, and for success, without knowing even this fundamental, the whole world is in extreme confusion. The nuclear weapons developed to become the strong in the evil order of the survival of the fittest have become enormous. Carl Sagan, an American space scientist, argued that if even 1% of the currently possessed nuclear weapons exploded, a “nuclear winter” would come and plants and animals on earth would become extinct.
1. Who indeed am I, and what kind of being am I supposed to be?
If we want to know “Who am I?” we can find out by reading the book, the Bible, that has been passed down from the first man, Adam. It reveals that all people were made by God the Creator as “the image of God,” the house of God. A house exists for its owner, and the owner builds and manages the house. If a house rebels against the homeowner, God, and acts as the owner, it becomes an empty house; and into the empty house, the house of God who is Spirit, the devil and evil spirits who rebelled against God and were driven out enter, coil themselves, and swarm. This is the state of original sin. (John 8:44) The moment Adam committed original sin, all human beings together with Adam were sentenced to the eternal punishment of hell assigned to the devil and evil spirits. (Romans 3:23)
Nevertheless, because God loved us, from the time of Adam He established the new covenant: “I will save you through Christ, the offspring of the virgin.” (Genesis 3:15) The God who established the new covenant personally took on flesh and came as Christ, and that person is Jesus Christ. He bore all our sins in our place, was nailed to the cross and died, rose again on the third day, abolished the authority of Satan and the authority of hell, is still alive today, and is knocking on the door of each person’s heart that has become the devil’s house. (Revelation 3:20) Each of us lives physical life only once as a period of suspended execution of eternal punishment in hell. If we receive and serve this Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, then according to God’s law, John 1:12, our status changes into children of God, and the corresponding authority is given.
God, who is the owner of all things, wants us who have become His children to live together within the abundance of God the Father. Upgraded beyond the original state of being the image of God, the house of God, I have become the temple of God. (1 Corinthians 3:16) Only then do I come to know who I am. I also come to know that what I must do on this earth is to live as a coworker of God the Father, who is doing the work of re-creation, salvation, and after finishing this life, enter the life of infinite glory in the eternal homeland. As coworkers in the work of salvation, enjoying doing good and sharing, evangelism, is the greatest investment we can make for the afterlife of eternal life. The Bible clearly tells us where we, who live the life God has appointed for us as a single opportunity, should place our hope on this earth and what we should sow and cultivate.
2. Those who have become children of God are told not to put their hope in uncertain riches.
Europe received the gospel earlier than the East, but an important reason Europe, which came to value money more than the gospel, became richer than necessary was colonial exploitation and slavery. Through triangular trade centered on slaves, sugar, and manufactured goods, the rich of Europe came to possess carriages and mansions even better than those of kings. The result of becoming wealthy was war. In this way, the basic law of the economy of darkness, which seeks to accumulate wealth beyond what is necessary, is to climb upward by stepping on the sacrifice of others. This originated from Cain’s economy, in which he struck his brother to death with a stone and built a city.
God said, “Do not put your hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but put your hope in God.” (Verse 17) The phrase “uncertain wealth” speaks of the instability of wealth. The purpose of life is not money, status, health, or long life, but the restoration of the image of God.
Yet the common hope of most people is to become rich. Saints who have received salvation and become the temple of God need only concentrate on God. God, who is the owner, maintains, repairs, and takes responsibility for His house. Daniel, who held to and enjoyed this even though he lived in captivity, cried out in Daniel 12:3, “Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.” The blessing of storing up a good foundation for the future and shining forever comes only when we always abide in the Lord and are used in leading our neighbors to the Lord.
3. Those who have become children of God are told to put all their hope in God and always be humble.
Most people seem humble when they have nothing. However, when they drive better cars than others, live in bigger houses than others, and rise to higher positions, their hearts easily become high. When the heart becomes high, life begins to fall apart. This is because pride goes before destruction. Wealth is like a mirage in the desert. If we chase after it to grasp it, it moves farther away the more we chase it, and in the end, the mirage disappears and we even lose the way.
God abundantly created all things necessary for our life and appointed us as stewards to manage them. We must remember that everything we have belongs to God, and we are stewards who temporarily manage what belongs to God. One day, we will stand before God and settle accounts for how we used what God gave us.
I bless you to put all your hope in God and be victorious.
