The Firstfruits of Our Resurrection. (1 Corinthians 15:20-28)
Verse 20 “But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.”
The resurrection of Jesus, who came as Christ, becomes the “firstfruits” of all the living and the dead, those who have fallen asleep. Jesus, who rose as the firstfruits, completed the work of salvation, and when He returns, He first became the sure guarantee of the resurrection that will happen to all believers, and He also made certain the second resurrection, the resurrection of judgment, for all unbelievers.
1. Firstfruits and the Feast of Firstfruits
In the Jewish calendar, the fourteenth day of Nisan, the first month, beginning after sunset on the thirteenth day, is Passover, and for seven days from the fifteenth day, the Feast of Unleavened Bread is kept, during which unleavened bread, bread without yeast, is eaten. The day after the Sabbath during the Feast of Unleavened Bread is the “Feast of Firstfruits.” Therefore, the Feast of Firstfruits was always on a Sunday. When the Sabbath passed and dawn broke, the first ripe sheaf of barley was cut with a sickle amid the praise and thankful shouts of countless people, and this sheaf harvested as the firstfruits was brought into the temple court. The priest waved this sheaf as a wave offering from the northeast side of the altar of burnt offering toward the west, where the Most Holy Place was. (Leviticus 23:10-11)
After the wave offering, the barley grains were ground finely into flour and offered as a meal offering. A handful of barley flour was sprinkled and burned on the fire of the altar of burnt offering, and one ram was offered as a burnt offering. This was the sacrifice offered in the temple on the Feast of Firstfruits. After the sacrifice of the firstfruits on the Feast of Firstfruits was offered in the temple in this way, grain sales began in the Jerusalem market, and people could eat the harvested grain.
2. Jesus, who rose on the Feast of Firstfruits
The day Jesus died was Thursday, the day before Passover, the day when the lambs were slaughtered, and Friday was Passover, the special day. The Feast of Unleavened Bread was kept for seven days in connection with Passover, and the day after the Sabbath during the Feast of Unleavened Bread was the Feast of Firstfruits. “When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body. Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb.” (Mark 16:1-2) (See also John 19:31.)
After being in the ground for three days and three nights, Jesus rose exactly on the day when the Feast of Firstfruits was being observed. Through His resurrection, Jesus accomplished and showed that He became the “firstfruits” of those who have fallen asleep in Christ. Just as the barley harvest took place sequentially throughout all the regions of Israel beginning with the Feast of Firstfruits, the resurrection of Jesus, as the firstfruits, showed in advance the complete harvest to come, the resurrection of all the saints. In 1 Corinthians 15:23, today’s passage says, “But each in turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him.”
3. The resurrected Lord completed the work of saving mankind.
The core of the new covenant is the incarnation of Christ, His death on the cross, and His resurrection. Jesus Christ became the atoning sacrifice who paid the price of our sins once for all and forever on the cross, and His resurrection became the great victory of eternal life that made us live again, and the firstfruits. If Christ’s death was to pardon the price of the sins we committed, Christ’s resurrection was to completely restore us. (Romans 4:25) The Bible declares that Jesus Christ has become the firstfruits of the resurrection. (1 Corinthians 15:20, 23)
Jesus Christ, who became the firstfruits of the resurrection, will raise all of us again in the life of resurrection in Christ at the last time. We will be resurrected following Jesus Christ, who became the firstfruits of the resurrection, and live as the main figures of the new heaven and new earth. Verse 51 of today’s passage is the mystery of resurrection: “Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed.” The last trumpet is the sound of the angels’ trumpet announcing the end of this world. It is the sound of the trumpet that will be heard when the Lord returns. The moment that last trumpet sounds, we will all be changed in a flash, in an instant.
Conclusion: Not only those who have died and fallen asleep, but also the living will be resurrected.
Verse 52 says, “For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.” Here, “we” refers to those who are alive and have not died until the end of the earth.
The Lord died and rose again on the third day, and after being in a mysterious resurrected body, He did not go to heaven only as a soul, but must have gone in His resurrected body. The resurrected Lord is still seated at the right hand of the throne and works by the Holy Spirit. We too will be changed into such a body and live forever.
The core of resurrection is transformation. After resurrection, we will be clothed with the resurrection body and live forever in the new heaven and new earth, our heavenly homeland. This physical body we now wear will be used for a short time in this world and then left behind. We cannot live forever in this body. Everything in this world is a preparation process, and transformation is essential. In verse 53, it says, “For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality.” In the original text, the word “must” appears twice. It says, “the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal must clothe itself with immortality.”
When we are resurrected, not only our bodies but also our minds, our diseased hearts, and our distorted values will all be changed. Human relationships and family relationships will also be reorganized into the most beautiful relationships. Of course, there will be continuity of consciousness. We will know that this person was my husband, my wife, my child, my parent, or my friend. But at that time, the dimension will not be the same as now. Centered on God the Father, everyone will become brothers and sisters. The Lord said that after the resurrection, people will neither marry nor be given in marriage, but will be like the angels in heaven. “Death is the terminal station of the world in which we live wearing this body, but it is the departure station toward eternal life.” Death is not the end of life, but the beginning of eternal life. For us who believe in the resurrected Jesus, death is the gateway into eternal life.
Just as Jesus rose as the firstfruits of the Feast of Firstfruits, we who believe in Jesus will also be resurrected following Jesus. Beloved everyone, let us praise the Lord who has risen and is with us. And let us proclaim this blessed news. May the Lord of resurrection give great grace to all of us.
