The Purpose of Life Is to Become One Body with the Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Timothy 4:6-10)

I hope that Christianity and believers who have fallen into religion while serving the idol of self-centeredness can hear the Word that God sternly commands. 1 Timothy 4:7 in the Bible commands us who believe: “Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly.” This is God’s goal, by which He causes us to be born again and reach complete salvation. God the Creator is re-creating His chosen ones in this way.

However, most Christians have not escaped from self-centeredness and have had little interest in reaching the true godliness God desires. Of course, godliness is never suddenly achieved in a single moment, but requires a process of training. The apostle Paul also confessed in Philippians 3:12, “Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.”

1. In the world, there are many beings that deceive people so they cannot reach godliness.

Godliness is for the soul of each person to hold to God’s covenant of Christ, become one with Jesus Christ, and become the temple of God, the soul of God. The devil, who deceived the first man in the Garden of Eden into holding to lies instead of the first covenant and falling into destruction, is still mobilizing everything in the world to deceive people so that they cannot hold to the new covenant.

In the life of faith, God must be the purpose, not a means. If God is made a means, one falls into a religion of blessings that serves oneself as an idol. In order to restore the image of God, we must receive the Lord Jesus as Lord and Savior of our souls and fix our souls, meaning our hearts and thoughts, on the Lord Jesus. This must become the foundation of the life of faith. God is the One we must receive, follow, and serve, not a means we carry around and seek only when needed.

Galatians 5:16 says, “So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” A self-centered person is a “person who belongs to the flesh,” and a Christ-centered person is a “person who belongs to the Spirit.”

2. The Lord tells us to train ourselves to reach godliness.

He said to awaken new believers and young brothers so that they would not be deceived by false Christian religious life, but reach true godliness. In this way, when one is used in evangelism and nurture, the one who awakens brothers also grows closer to true godliness and becomes a good servant of Christ Jesus. In English, there is also the saying, “Teaching is learning.” It means that teaching is learning.

It means that each of us who has received new life must pray and strive so that our souls, meaning our hearts and thoughts, may concentrate only on the Lord Jesus Christ. The Word telling us to strive to reach godliness means to strive to become one with the Lord, who is the head. Godliness refers to a soul completely offered to the Lord Jesus Christ and the life that follows from it.

In the past, because of original sin, our souls lived lives offered to the body, the world, and Satan. We became slaves of sin and lived self-centered, flesh-centered, selfish lives. But now, because we have been saved by the blood of Jesus’ cross and have become children of God and the temple of God, God is re-creating us so that we may be changed to be centered only on the Lord Jesus.

Now we must live as those who belong to Jesus, those who love, learn from, and follow Jesus, and those who are united with Jesus. Because the Lord loved me with all His life, I also love only the Lord with all my heart. The life of reaching godliness is to entrust everything of mine to the Lord and desire to be completely held in the hands of Jesus.

3. The blessings that come as we reach godliness are beyond words.

1 Timothy 4:8 says, “For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” Matthew 6:33 says, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” He allows us to enjoy the blessing of royal priests even in this life and guarantees eternal reward in the eternal homeland in the life to come.

In 1 Timothy 4:9, it says, “This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance,” meaning there is nothing more precious than this. Godliness, becoming one with the Lord, is the most certain and most precious supreme promise and fulfillment of Acts 1:8.

Then, in order to reach godliness, believers must specifically practice escaping from self-centeredness, money-centeredness, and success-centeredness. For this, we must strive to become completely one with Jesus, who is the head. In order to become one with the Lord, we must strive to receive the Word and pray holding to the Word we have received, like David in Psalm 1. We cannot reach godliness without entering into the Word and prayer. Ephesians 6:18 also says, “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.”

In order to train oneself to reach godliness, the first step is to hear the Word, pray, and act like David. The second is to put a bit in the tongue, escape from self-centered speech centered on worry, criticism, and resentment, exercise self-control, and change into a life of speech filled with thanksgiving, praise, and gospel evangelism. Words serve as the rudder of a ship that determines the direction of life. Then we will be changed into lives that are not stained by the world, but spread God’s love to our neighbors, and we will be able to live as the source of blessing.
