The Beginning and Final Destination of Life’s Journey. (2 Thessalonians 1:6-12)

Verse 10 “On the day he comes to be glorified in his holy people and to be marveled at among all those who have believed. This includes you, because you believed our testimony to you.”

Even if we go on a short trip, if we go without knowing where we are starting from, where we are going, and what we must do when we get there, we would belong to a dementia patient or a mentally ill person. The physical life given to us human beings is a very, very important period given only once to everyone. During this time, God re-creates each one of us, and because of this, our eternal life in the afterlife is decided. Then we must clearly know the fundamentals and answer we absolutely must know, and how we must entrust ourselves to God, who re-creates us, and live under His guidance. We must also keep in mind that the devil, who seeks to deceive us to the end and drag us into eternal destruction, is the ruler of the world.

1. Original mankind, the fundamental problem, and the new covenant

God created every person together with Adam in the image of God, entrusted each one with the paradise given to them, and made them rule over all things and praise God. Adam’s soul, meaning heart and thoughts, which belonged to God who is Spirit, was given a covenant by which he could always be with God and maintain the image of God. (Genesis 2:16-17) People were eternal beings who lived by holding to God’s covenant established at the center of paradise. Also, Adam, meaning mankind, a being who lived with God by God’s power, was a being who could rule and govern even the devil and evil spirits who had been driven out of heaven. However, while Adam’s soul was loosely holding to God’s covenant, he was deceived by the devil’s lie. As a result, he broke the first covenant, rebelled against God, fell into being one who belongs to the flesh, and was sentenced to eternal punishment in hell. Nevertheless, because God loved us, He established the new covenant that He would save us through Christ, pardon and restore us, and re-create us. The entire Bible is the promise concerning Christ, the new covenant.

2. Each person’s life journey given as a suspended execution period

The time and region in which each person lives physical life are all different. God created each person uniquely, and the family and mission given to each person are also different. What is the same is that during the period of physical life, each person is given the opportunity to hold to the covenant of Christ, receive pardon and restoration, be re-created, and be used as a coworker. What is important is the fact that God allowed physical life in order to save and re-create me. For the soul, meaning heart and thoughts, that belongs to the flesh while being bound to self, money, and success-centeredness to hold to the new covenant, become a soul that belongs to the Holy Spirit, and receive salvation, the basic sense of calling must be clear. When a person realizes the fundamental calling, from that point on, they can transfer from the life train of Ephesians 2:2 to the Christ train of John 14:6. They are changed from one who belongs to the flesh, centered on self, money, and success, into one who belongs to the Spirit, centered on the gospel and evangelism, and they gain freedom. They come to know that there is nothing that belongs to them. They realize that their body and heart are not their own but God’s possession, and that material things and time are not their own, and they are re-created as people of Christ. If, while living the appointed life journey, they do not realize the fundamental calling and cannot hold the hand of Christ, they remain bound to self, money, and success-centeredness, cannot escape from being one who belongs to the flesh, and face death, the final destination.

3. The final destination of life’s journey is two gates of eternal life.

Those who reject the hand of Christ to the end on the worldly path of Ephesians 2:2 enter eternal punishment, as in verses 8-9 of today’s passage, without receiving pardon and restoration. They are people who belong to the flesh and people who belong to John 8:44, and knowingly or unknowingly, they live giving pain to saints who hold to the gospel, and they live swept up in the endless waves of tribulation. The Bible testifies that when unbelievers suffer physical death, they immediately fall into the realm of death. That place is a place where there is none of God’s common grace at all. The Bible calls that place Hades. Hades is the prison realm of death, and unbelievers are confined there immediately after death. Then, at the time of Jesus’ return, they will put on resurrection bodies and receive God’s great judgment. However, the saints who, by God’s grace, hold to the hand of Christ and enter the ark become people who belong to the Spirit, walk the heavenly path, and are completely re-created holy in their whole spirit, soul, and body. Even while living the appointed physical life, they enjoy the rest of verse 7, and when they arrive at the final destination, they enter into the eternal glory of verses 10-12.

Conclusion: The attitude of saints who become people of the Spirit and walk the heavenly path

Looking at verse 11 of today’s passage, the apostle Paul said he prayed that the Thessalonian believers would be counted worthy of God’s calling. Calling is important, but we must become people worthy of the calling. In order to receive the calling and become worthy of it, as people who belong to the Spirit, we must have the happiness and joy of enjoying the blessing of Immanuel. Whatever we do, when we know how to choose the narrow path according to God’s will and boldly take up the cross, God’s power is revealed.

The foundation of a saint, as in Galatians 2:20, is that before evangelism, missions, and service, the self that belongs to the flesh dies on the cross. Working by one’s own strength without crucifying oneself is doing the work of the devil, not the work of God. When Jesus said at the Last Supper that Peter would deny Him three times, Peter confidently said, “Even if everyone else betrays You, I will never deny You.” However, because he had not yet escaped from being one who belonged to the flesh, when he faced a crisis, he denied Jesus. In the same way, the cross cannot be borne by one’s own strength and courage. The Holy Spirit must govern us.

Through Christ, God made us alive, we who were dead in sins and transgressions, meaning we had been sentenced to eternal punishment in hell, and made us children of God who belong to the Spirit. We have come to live in the blessing of Immanuel. The people of the world who belong to the flesh are being dragged into eternal hell while remaining ignorant of the beginning and end of life. May we, who have been saved by the Lord’s grace, become evangelists who are preciously used in God’s work of salvation.
