The Lamp of the Saints Walking the Heavenly Path. (Psalm 119:105-112)
Verse 105 “Your Word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”
John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress is a Christian classic that has been read more than any other book after the Bible. It beautifully contains the journey of the main character, Christian, from a dark world toward heaven. It vividly describes the process by which Christian leaves the City of Destruction, walks the difficult path of the world full of all kinds of adversity, suffering, and temptation, and finally reaches heaven, our true homeland.
For saints who walk the heavenly path in the world together with the Lord Jesus Christ, the Word “Your Word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path” means that it is an error-free navigation system. It is an unfamiliar road, and it is dark and rough, but if we hold to and follow the Lord’s Word, it becomes the path of victory.
1. The reason we need a lamp and light on our life’s journey
The Bible describes human beings living in the world as “beings trapped in the framework of darkness and death,” not knowing where they came from or where they are going. The reason is that, because of Adam’s rebellion against God, each person became their own master, and the world became a world of darkness. Every person is given the opportunity to live physical life for an appointed time in the world where the devil is king, to hold to the new covenant, and receive salvation. If they cannot hold the hand of salvation that God extends during this period, they cannot help but be dragged toward eternal hell. It is a dark and miserable road, like the road of a death-row prisoner being dragged to the place of execution. No matter how high a social position someone has or how much money they have made, in God’s eyes, they are nothing more than a person being dragged along the miserable road to hell. However, if a human being, during the period of physical life, holds to the new covenant, the hand of God’s salvation, and receives Christ as Lord and Savior, they receive pardon and restoration, obtain new life, become God’s temple, and are given the function of a lamp that lights the world.
2. The lamp that has become the temple needs the oil of the Word
Saints who have received salvation and new life, yet are walking the heavenly path in this dark world, absolutely need a lamp that lights the darkness. People of the world who live in darkness also live with lamps such as professional knowledge, experience, and money. However, such things are not true lamps. They may seem to shine brightly, but like a match flame, they quickly go out.
John 8:12 says, “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” We saints who walk the heavenly path must follow the Lord. All the words of Scripture are written concerning the Lord.
This psalm also tells us that there is no other lamp that can light the world of darkness except God’s Word. What kind of lamp are you currently using? Is it perhaps not the lamp of God’s Word, but the lamp of your own opinion based on your knowledge or experience? If so, you must change it quickly.
3. If you carry the wrong lamp, you enter the path of failure.
We must certainly remember that only the lamp of God’s Word is the true lamp that brightly lights the dark path of life. Saul was the first king of Israel, but he failed because he did not carry the lamp of the Word. However, David was a commander who went through countless wars, and amazingly, he was not defeated even once. This was because he always went forward carrying the lamp of the Word, as in Psalm 1.
The Bible teaches the secret of the Passover, through which enslaved Israel could be set free and receive salvation. Also, Israel, who was freed from slavery and came out of Egypt, was trained through forty years of wilderness life to light and follow the lamp of the Word. However, most of the first generation of the Exodus, who could not hold to God’s Word, belonged to the flesh, and could not throw away the lamp of the slave mentality, died in the wilderness without entering Canaan.
Conclusion: Wisdom to use the Lord’s Word well as the lamp of life
In verse 97, the psalmist confessed, “Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long.” If we love God’s Word like a thirsty deer searches for streams of water, we do not think reading the Bible is difficult or complicated. John 5:39 says, “You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me.” We study the Bible because this Bible is God’s love letter filled with the Word of eternal life. If we recite and meditate all day on the Word of God we have held to, like David in Psalm 1, we will be able to bear much fruit like a tree planted by streams of water. The Lord’s Word becomes a lamp for our feet and a light on our path as we walk the heavenly path in this dark world.
John 8:12 says, “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” God’s Word is the lamp for my feet as I walk the heavenly path in this dark world. Through the Word, God gives wisdom to gain eternal life and wisdom to live rightly in the world.
The reason He makes us walk the heavenly path in this dark world is found in Deuteronomy 8:2. He teaches, “Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years,” and explains the reason. Please examine whether your present life path is perhaps dark. Beloved everyone, we are all happy pilgrims going toward heaven.
Like Christian in John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress, I bless all of us in the name of the Lord to successfully complete the path of the pilgrim.
