The Secret of Actually Being with God
Psalm 119:97 “Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long.”
God is Spirit and the Word. When we hold to God’s Word, He is with us through the Holy Spirit and enables us to enjoy the blessing of Immanuel. Psalm 119:97 shows the best way to eat God’s Word. The word “meditate” in today’s passage (verses 97 and 99) is translated as “meditate” in the Revised Korean Bible, but the original Hebrew meaning is “to chew the cud.” Ruminant herbivores, when they see grass, first simply tear it off and swallow it. Then they bring back up the grass they have already swallowed and chew it again all day. By chewing it well again and mixing it with saliva and gastric juices, they digest it. In this way, the image of a cow taking in fodder becomes a good example of how we should take in the fodder of God’s Word.
1. Meditating on the Word is enjoying the blessing of Immanuel.
The psalmist’s way of enjoying being with God and entrusting himself so that God would completely govern him was, “I meditate on the Word all day long in a quiet voice.” (Verse 97) “Meditating” means that the Word does not depart from my mouth. It means allowing the Word to rule my thoughts and heart. Looking at John 1:1, the Word is God. The Word is Jesus. When our heart and thoughts, meaning our soul, are ruled by the Word, the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, works, and the heavenly armies and angels minister. The best way to fill my heart and thoughts, meaning the sanctuary and soul, with God is to meditate on the Word. A life that follows the Word is the path through which the broken temple is rebuilt and healed. Also, a life that follows the Word becomes a life that shines light in this dark world. A life that follows the Word is the life of a saint walking the heavenly path and a life of being made completely holy.
Even for us living today, the Lord’s Word is still given like the covenant of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. James 1:21 says, “Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the Word planted in you, which can save you.” This Word, like the tree of the knowledge of good and evil given to Adam, is still the key to “Immanuel,” God being with us.
2. We must eat the Word in order to grow spiritually.
Because people are spiritual beings, they do not live by food alone; they must eat the Word of God, who is Spirit, in order to grow spiritually. (Deuteronomy 8:3) The word “meditate” means “to ponder, to chew over.” It means chewing over and meditating on the Word as a cow chews the cud.
Therefore, we continually meditate on God’s Word so that it is not merely knowledge, but so that God’s Holy Spirit may fully govern our heart and thoughts, meaning our soul and sanctuary. When the power of the Holy Spirit given through the Word works in my soul and body in this way, we come to confess like the psalmist, “How sweet are Your Words…” We must taste it to know its taste.
Although they held only to the outer shell of the Bible, the Jewish method of educating children, as in Deuteronomy 6:4-9, is to make them simply listen, read, and memorize unconditionally from a young age. Children read and recite without knowing the meaning. Then, as they grow, they come to understand and enjoy the meaning one by one for themselves.
John 6:63 says, “The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The Words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life.”
3. The heavenly path, the remaining physical life of those who have been saved, is the path of following the Word.
God’s Word is the invisible God revealing Himself. God’s Word is God Himself contained in letters and given to us. Therefore, a life that follows the Word is a life that follows God, and the happiest life is a life that lives according to God’s Word.
In this way, God wants to participate together in our lives at every moment of life. Therefore, living step by step according to the Word is walking with God and following God. Therefore, a life that holds to the Word is the most valuable life and happiness.
1 Peter 2:25 says, “For you were like sheep going astray, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.” The Word of the Lord, who is our Shepherd, becomes the lamp for our feet and the light that brightens the heavenly path.
Closing: A life with God is the life of faith.
“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” (Joshua 1:8) This is the secret of Joshua and Israel’s victory. Finding the taste of the Word is the driving force that gives life to the life of the saints. The taste that satisfies my soul appears through receiving, reading, and meditating on God’s Word. When we do this, our soul, meaning our heart and thoughts, gains great satisfaction and receives new strength. True life of faith begins and proceeds from a personal relationship of actually being with God.
God created the universe and all things, created people in the Garden of Eden in the image of God, was with them, and was very pleased. God wants to be with people. Although they rebelled and fell under original sin, because He loves them, He saves and re-creates them through Christ.
The moment we believe in and receive that God, God comes into our being, and we also enter into God’s being and become God’s temple.
Hold to even one key verse of the Word given to you, continue memorizing it and meditating on it. See what happens. For those who draw near to the Word, the work of God’s Word is certain to take place.
