1 Timothy 2:1-7 God Wants All People to Be Saved
Together with Adam, all people rebelled against God the Creator and, because of that sin, were sentenced to eternal punishment in hell. However, every person has been given an opportunity, during the suspended execution period, to live physical life once in the world and receive pardon and restoration from the sentenced punishment. The One who saves us from the punishment of sin is God. He promised to save us through Christ, and according to His promise, God Himself became man and came as Christ.
Through the Word of Scripture, God commands the prayer that Christians must devote themselves to. We must not remain only in prayer for ourselves, but must be able to offer prayers for our neighbors, our nation, and the world. This is the decisive difference between people who belong to the Holy Spirit and human beings who belong to the flesh.
1. Believers who belong to the Holy Spirit are mediators between God and the world.
The only God who exists by Himself is the God of all people. All people are creatures whom God created in the image of God. But together with Adam, all people sinned and rebelled, were cut off from God’s glory, and came to receive eternal punishment in hell. Nevertheless, because God loved us, He established the new covenant that He would save us through Christ, came Himself as Jesus Christ, bore our sins in our place, died an atoning death on the cross, and rose again on the third day. He is still alive and is carrying out the work of salvation.
Jesus Christ, the completion of the new covenant, knocks on the door of each person’s heart in every generation through evangelists and speaks the gospel in order to save them. (Revelation 3:20) God said that He “wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.” (1 Timothy 2:4) God sent Jesus as the mediator between God and mankind. (Verse 6) The Lord, who completed the sin offering and fellowship offering, has established believers who first believed and received salvation as Christ’s ambassadors with full authority, as mediators between God and all people.
2. Believers must always enjoy oneness with the Lord.
Although we received Jesus as Lord and Savior and obtained new life, our soul, trained in the state of the old person, falls into worry instead of prayer whenever problems arise. However, when we cast all our anxieties on the Lord, hold to the Word the Lord gives, and enter into prayer, we can experience the answer of becoming one with the Lord. 1 Thessalonians 5:17 says, “Pray continually,” meaning that prayer is necessary for the life of the soul just as breathing is necessary for physical life. Not praying to God is a state of unbelief, so it is the same as asking the devil.
The Lord Jesus said in John 16:23, “My Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.” Even if our physical fathers may have been poor and unable to meet all our needs, our God the Father is the Lord of all things, so He can fill whatever we ask. A person who uses the privilege of prayer only for themselves is still an immature believer who has not escaped from the flesh. But the Lord wants us to grow so that the realm of our prayer broadens. He wants us to use the privilege of prayer for the things that please God and for all people.
3. The Lord commanded us to offer intercessory prayer.
Intercessory prayer is not prayer for myself, but prayer for others. It is praying while standing between God and the people of the world. Intercessory prayer is participating in Jesus’ ministry. “All people” refers to all people on the earth. All people are those who have been given the opportunity to believe in Jesus Christ and receive salvation. That is why He tells us to pray for them.
He especially told us to pray for rulers and those in high positions. When Paul wrote this letter, the situation of the age was that Christians were receiving severe persecution because of the Roman emperor Nero. God is the One who carries out history through the prayers of the saints. We have been given the mission to pray between God and worldly authorities so that they may be used according to the will of God, who established them.
Conclusion: Believers have been established as a royal priesthood.
1 Peter 2:9 calls the saints “a royal priesthood.” This means that although they are priests, they have authority like kings. In other words, we Christians are people who can stand between God and the world through prayer, and who have the authority to move the world through prayer.
In particular, Jesus said in John 14:12, “Whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these.” This is based precisely on our prayers. Our prayers become an important channel that continues the Lord’s ministry on this earth.
We who believe are the greatest people, established as mediators between God and the world anytime and anywhere. May you be preciously used as God’s coworkers who have become one with Christ.
