Numbers 29

Regulations for the Festival of Trumpets, the Day of Atonement,

and the Festival of Tabernacles (Numbers 29:1-11 )

Verse 1: “‘On the first day of the seventh month hold a sacred assembly and do no regular work. It is a day for you to sound the trumpets.’”

Originally, the name of the book of Numbers was not “Numbers” but “In the Wilderness.” Then in the Septuagint, completed in the 3rd century

BC, the title “In the Wilderness” was changed to “Numbers.” But more important than the title is knowing why the Israelites ended up

wandering in the wilderness. The first generation of Israelites who came out of Egypt complained endlessly in the wilderness, and when they

came to Kadesh Barnea their unbelief reached its peak. As a result, they were unable even to set out on the path of conquering Canaan and

had to turn back into the wilderness. After 40 years had passed, the second generation that had come out of Egypt was newly reorganized as

the army of Israel, and now Canaan, which they were to conquer, lay right before their eyes. Today’s passage also contains the secret of victory

that God gave to Israel just before war.

1. Fix Your Attention on God through a Life of Worship

1) There were four factors that deceived Israel and led them into complaining.

2) The fundamental reason for their complaining was unbelief toward God.

3) Complaining comes from unbelief toward God.

4) If in our hearts there are complaints, grumbling, or hatred, these become channels for the devil.

2. Today’s Passage Also Emphasizes a Worship-Centered Life

1) Verses 1–6 set out the way offerings are to be made for the New Year Festival of Trumpets.

2) First, the Festival of Trumpets is the sacrifice offered on the first day of the new year.

3) The offerings presented on the Day of Atonement were the same as those presented at the Festival of Trumpets.

4) The fifteenth day of that month is the Festival of Tabernacles, or the Feast of Booths, a festival of thanksgiving.

3. The Offerings for the Festival of Tabernacles Were the Most Numerous

1) The offerings presented on the first day of the Festival of Tabernacles.

2) Each day, the number of young bulls offered was reduced by one.

3) The vow offerings and freewill offerings mentioned in verses 39–40 were given voluntarily.

4) The reason God commanded Israel, who were about to go to war, to offer sacrifices.

Conclusion: We Must Know the Root and Hold On to Christ Alone

1) God the Creator made human beings in the image of God.

2) There was the event in which, deceived by the lies of the devil, they ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and rebelled against

God.

3) From Adam to the time of Noah was the patriarchal age, when they held on to the covenant of Christ and offered blood sacrifices.

4) We must firmly hold to the secret of victory in the conquest war for Canaan.

The life of a believer is to hold on only to the covenant of Christ and live according to the Word of God. It is not a life in which I am my own

master and live bound to the flesh, but a life in which I receive Christ alone as Lord and live according to the Lord’s Word. Galatians 6:7–8 says,

“Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that naturewill

reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Holding fast to the word given only in Christ with

an "Amen" and living today's life is the way to victory. I pray that you always hold fast to 3 todays, receive and enjoy the fullness of

the Holy Spirit, and triumph in the spiritual battle.
