운명과 갈등에서 해방되는 길
‘나’중심이 되어버린 인간은 둘 이상만 모여도 상호 간에 비교와 갈등과 반목이 시작됩니다. 빈부의 갈등, 세대 간의 갈등, 좌우의 갈등, 인종 간의 갈등. 끝없는 갈등은 무한한 분쟁을 유발하며 더더욱 골이 깊어갑니다. 쌍방간의 살육 전쟁들도 끊임없이 이어져 왔으나 전쟁도 해결의 길은 아니었습니다. 근본 원인인 ‘나’중심을 창조주 하나님 중심으로 바꾸는 복음만이 갈등 해결의 유일한 답입니다.
캐나다의 '존 케디' 라는 선교사는 식인종이 사는 작은 섬으로 복음을 전하러 갔었습니다. 그는 생명의 위험을 느끼면서도 식인종들에게 복음을 전하였습니다. 그리스도의 사랑으로 그들을 도우며 언어를 습득하여 성경을 번역하고 교육을 시켰습니다. 그가 사역을 마치고 죽고 난 후 사람들은 그의 기념비를 세웠습니다. 그 기념비에 사람들은 이렇게 썼습니다. '1848년에 그가 이곳에 처음 상륙하였을 때에는 이곳에 그리스도인이 한 명도 없었다. 그러나 그가 세상을 떠난 1872년에는 여기에 식인종이 한 명도 없다.' 즉 그는 섬 사람 모두를 그리스도인 되게 한 것입니다. 그리스도인이 된 그들은 더 이상 식인종이 아니었습니다. 복음은 이렇게 변화시키는 능력이 있습니다. 식인종도 그리스도인이 될 수 있는 것입니다.
1. 전쟁 국가 로마 치하의 갈등은 심각했었습니다.
1세기 로마 시대에 골로새 지방의 부자 빌레몬은 인근 에베소에 방문하던 기간에 사도 바울로부터 복음을 받아 그리스도인이 되었습니다. 그는 가족과 친지들을 전도하여 그의 집에서 가정교회로 모이고 있었습니다. 당시 로마 시대는 노예제도가 발달되어 있었는데 빌레몬은 노예를 부리고 있는 부자였습니다. 그의 노예들 중 오네시모라는 종이 빌레몬으로부터 무언가를 훔쳐 달아났습니다. 목숨을 걸고 도망한 오네시모는 현재 터키지역인 골로새에서 로마까지 도망갔었는데, 그곳에서 샛집 감옥에 수감되어있는 사도바울을 만나 복음을 받고 예수그리스도를 구주로 영접하여 그리스도인이 되었습니다. 바울은 빌레몬서를 기록하여 오네시모를 빌레몬에게 보냈습니다. 바울은 빌레몬에게 도망친 노예지만 용서하고 노예가 아니라 주 예수그리스도 안에서 한 가족으로 오네시모를 받아들일 것을 편지를 통해 요청하였습니다.
오네시모가 빌레몬에게 돌아가는 것은 정말 싫은 일이었을 것입니다. 도주한 노예는 사형을 당할 수도 있었습니다. 그러나 바울은 노예의 주인인 빌레몬의 권리를 인정하며 바른길을 택했고, 오네시모도 바울의 뜻을 따라 죽게 되면 죽으리라 하고, 옛 주인에게 돌아가 정식으로 용서와 승인을 받기로 했습니다. 복음 안에서 빌레몬은 당연히 오네시모를 용서하고 다시 바울에게 보내어 옥 수발을 들며 동역자로 쓰임 받을 수 있도록 로마로 보낸 것입니다.
2. 복음은 갈등을 넘어 사랑의 관계로 만들어 주는 유일한 길입니다.
인간이 창조주 하나님과 단절되고 인간끼리 갈등할 수밖에 없는 근본 원인은 본래 하나님의 형상으로 지어진 자들이 아담과 함께 하나님께 반역하였고, 각자가 하나님의 형상인 자신을 찬탈하여 자기가 주인 되어 자기 형상으로 변질된 원죄 때문임을 성경은 밝히고 있습니다. 그러나 하나님께서는 그리스도를 통해 우리의 모든 문제 해결하시고 구원해주실 것을 약속하셨습니다. 언약하신 대로 하나님께서 직접 그리스도로 오셔서 십자가와 부활을 통해 모든 문제 해결하시고 우리 각 사람의 구주가 되어주시기 위하여 마음의 문을 두드리고 계신 사실을 복음이라 합니다(계시록3:20). 이 복음을 듣고 예수그리스도를 구주로 모시면(요한복음1:12절) 구원받아 하나님의 자녀로 신분이 변화되며 그리스도인이 됩니다. 머리 되신 주 안에 있으면 인간관계는 변합니다. 머리 되신 주님 안에서 동일 지체가 되었기 때문입니다.
주 예수그리스도의 구속으로 말미암아 수직적인 하나님과의 관계가 화목하게 되었기 때문에, 수평적인 이웃과의 관계도 회복되는 것입니다. 우리 사이의 모든 관계는 그리스도 안에서 하나님과의 관계가 어떤 관계에 있느냐에 따라 달라지게 됩니다. 하나님을 “우리 아버지”라 부르게 된 성도들끼리는 서로 사랑하는 형제자매들이 되었습니다. 만일 빌레몬과 오네시모가 그리스도 안에 있는 자들이 아니라면, 주인과 노예라는 관계나 세상 제도를 넘어서지 못하고 갈등관계속에 있었을 것입니다.
3. 그리스도인은 “믿음과 사랑”의 사람입니다.
“믿음”은 하나님과의 관계를 나타내고, “사랑”은 형제 상호 간의 관계를 이어주는 말씀입니다. 그러므로 믿음과 사랑이 없다면 하나님과도 상관이 없고, 주변 성도들과도 상관이 없는 사람입니다. 우리는 빌레몬서를 쓴 바울의 모습에서 주님의 모습을 볼 수 있습니다. 존귀한 사도가 도망친 한 노예를 위하여 감옥에서 헌신하고 있는 모습은 천국의 영광을 떠나 종의 형체를 입으시고 이 땅에 오사 죽기까지 복종하신 주 예수그리스도를 보게 합니다.
빌레몬서의 주인공은 누구일까요? 바울? 빌레몬? 오네시모? 아닙니다. 빌레몬서의 주인공도 바로 예수그리스도십니다. 세 사람은 모두가 “그리스도 안에, 주 안에” 있는 사람들입니다. 만일 등장하는 세 사람 중 어느 한 사람이라도 그리스도 예수님 안에 있지 않았다면 빌레몬서는 기록될 이유가 없었을 것입니다.
믿는 우리는 모두 주님 안에서 주의 이름으로 살고있는 주님의 제자들입니다. 전에는 나 자신도 하나님의 영광을 도적질해 가지고 반역했던 오네시모였다는 사실이 고백 되시기를 바랍니다. 그렇다면, 이제 우리 각 사람이 믿음과 사랑 안에서 도와야 할 오네시모는 누구입니까? 주님 안에서 믿음과 사랑의 결실이 풍성하시기를 축복합니다.

The Path to Liberation from Fate and Conflict
People who have become “me-centered” start comparing, conflicting, and antagonizing each other as soon as two or more people gather together. Conflict between rich and poor, conflict between generations, conflict between the left and right, conflict between races—endless conflicts cause infinite disputes and the rift between them become deeper and deeper. Murderous wars between different sides occured continuously, but war was not the path to resolution. The only answer to conflict resolution is the gospel, which changes the root cause—“me-centeredness” to “the Creator God-centeredness.”
A Scots-Canadian missionary named John Geddie went to a small island inhabited by cannibals to preach the gospel. He preached the gospel to the cannibals even though his life was in danger. With the love of Christ, he helped them, learned their language, translated the Bible for them, and educated them. After he completed his ministry and died, people erected a monument to him. On the monument, people wrote: “When he landed in 1848, there were no Christians here, and when he left in 1872 there were no heathen.” In other words, he made everyone on the island become Christians. When they became Christians, they were no longer cannibals. The gospel has this transforming power. Even cannibals can become Christians.
1. The conflict under Rome, a warring state, was serious.
During the 1st century Roman era, Philemon, a rich man from the Colossae region, received the gospel from the Apostle Paul while visiting nearby Ephesus and became a Christian. He evangelized his family and friends and gathered them at his home as a home-church. At that time, slavery was widespread in the Roman era, and Philemon was a rich man who owned slaves. One of his slaves, Onesimus, stole something from Philemon and ran away. Onesimus fled for his life from Colossae (currently Türkiye), to Rome. There, he met Apostle Paul, who was imprisoned in a house prison, received the gospel, accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, and became a Christian. Paul wrote the Epistle “Philemon” and sent Onesimus to Philemon. Through the letter, Paul asked Philemon to forgive Onesimus, even though he was a runaway slave, and to accept Onesimus as one of his family members in the Lord Jesus Christ, not as a slave.
It must have been really unpleasant for Onesimus to return to Philemon. Runaway slaves could be put to death. However, Paul chose the right path by acknowledging the rights of Philemon, the slave's master, and Onesimus also was willing to follow Paul’s will even if it would result in his death and decided to return to his former master and receive formal forgiveness and approval. In the gospel, Philemon naturally forgave Onesimus and sent him back to Rome to Paul so that he could be used as a co-worker as he helped Paul during his imprisonment.
2. The gospel is the only way to overcome conflict and create a relationship of love.
The Bible reveals that the fundamental reason why humans are disconnected from God the Creator and have no choice but to conflict among themselves is because of the original sin, in which those who were originally created in the image of God rebelled against God along with Adam, and each person usurped himself that was image of God, becoming his own master and becoming transformed into his own image. However, God promised to solve all our problems and save us through Christ. The gospel is the fact that God came directly as Christ, as promised, and is knocking on the door of our hearts to solve all problems through the cross and resurrection and become the Lord and Savior of each of us (Revelation 3:20). If you hear this gospel and accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior (John 1:12), you will be saved, your status will change to a child of God, and you will become a Christian. Human relationships change when we are in the Lord, our Head. This is because we are all members of the same body in the Lord, our head.
Because the vertical relationship with God has been reconciled through the redemption given by the Lord Jesus Christ, the horizontal relationship with our neighbors is also restored. All relationships between us depend on our relationship with God in Christ. The believers who came to call God “Our Father” became brothers and sisters who loved each other. If Philemon and Onesimus were not in Christ, they would have been in conflict, unable to overcome the relationship of master and slave in the world system.
3. Christians are people of “faith and love.”
“Faith” represents the relationship with God, and “love” is the word that connects the relationship between brothers. Therefore, if you do not have faith and love, you have no relationship with God or with the believers around you. We can see the Lord's image in Paul's writing of the Epistle to Philemon. The sight of a noble apostle devoting himself in prison to a runaway slave makes us see the Lord Jesus Christ, who left the glory of heaven, took on the form of a servant, came to this earth, and became obedient to the point of death.
Who is the main character in the book of Philemon? Paul? Philemon? Onesimus? No. The main character of the book of Philemon is also Jesus Christ. All three are people were “in Christ and in the Lord.” If any of the three people who appear were not in Christ Jesus, there would have been no reason for the book of Philemon to be written.
All of us who believe are disciples of the Lord who live in the name of the Lord. I hope you will confess that in the past, you too were Onesimus, a traitor who stole the glory of God. Then who is the Onesimus whom each of us must now help in faith and love? I bless you that the fruits of your faith and love in the Lord will be abundant.
