Psalm 119:113-120 Those Who Belong to the Spirit and Those Who Belong to the Flesh

Verse 116 “Sustain me, my God, according to your promise, and I will live; do not let my hopes be dashed.”

Those who belong to the flesh, when they face a crisis, are busy looking for a way to escape and a solution in their own way, and they do not look to God. David, who belonged to the Spirit, was in a position of being pursued by King Saul for a long time. While fleeing, he had several opportunities to kill King Saul, but he did not kill the servant whom God had anointed and established. This was because he believed in God’s absolute sovereignty and knew that the ways of the world were not God’s will. God knew his heart, established David as king, and used him as a man of God. If David had not lived centered on God’s Word, he would have become a person belonging to the flesh and tried to forcefully accomplish what he wanted by human means, and God would have rejected him as He did Saul.

1. The Bible calls a person who belongs to the flesh wicked.

In verse 119 of today’s passage, it says, “All the wicked of the earth you discard like dross; therefore I love your statutes.” It says that those who throw away God’s Word and act according to their own methods and thoughts are wicked and like dross.

Like the bat in Aesop’s fable that ended up hiding in a dark cave, most church members seem like people who belong to the Spirit when they attend worship, but in their lives in the world, they live as people who belong to the flesh. This is because they have no assurance on either side. They have no assurance that if they live holding to God’s Word, they will surely be victorious, and they also have no assurance that they can succeed by their own knowledge and ability.

The reason believers do not have assurance in God’s Word is that they have never lived holding to God’s Word to the end. Most people live holding to God’s Word, but when a crisis comes, they quietly let go of it and do not live according to the Word. They return to their own opinions and the values of the world. There are not many people who live by staking everything on the Word with the heart that says, “Even if I fail, I will live holding to God’s Word.” However, many great figures in the Bible were people who lived holding to the Word to the end and overcame difficulties through the Word. Such people obtained final victory, and those who tasted that victory never became double-minded.

2. God becomes the protector on every path of life.

Verse 114 records, “You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your Word.” As the psalmist faced many difficulties and hardships, he found in God the refuge where he would be protected from those difficulties. He received Christ, the solver of all problems, as Lord and Savior, and held only to the Word given as the secret to enjoying His constant presence.

In Psalm 18:2, David praised, “The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”

Jesus said in John 15:19, “If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world.” Also, in John 16:33, He said, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” We believers try to believe in Jesus and live holding to God’s Word, but the evil enemy, the devil, deceives and torments us through people and events. That is why verse 115 of today’s passage cries out, “Away from me, you evildoers, that I may keep the commands of my God!”

3. God holds us by the promised Word.

There is a great Word of blessing in Isaiah 41:10. “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.” We simply need to live holding to the Word He has given in this way. That is why the psalmist prays in verses 116~117, “Sustain me, my God, according to your promise, and I will live; do not let my hopes be dashed. Uphold me, and I will be delivered; I will always have regard for your decrees.”

God still holds onto us through His Word today. To the Israelites who had exited Egypt and were on the verge of entering Canaan, God spoke the Book of Deuteronomy through Moses. Deuteronomy 6:6–9 says: "These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates."

Conclusion: The Final Judgment on Those Who Ignore the New Covenant

Those who live while ignoring the Word of the Gospel spend their entire lives rushing about in vain without ever knowing what true peace and happiness are, ultimately facing the final judgment. This is found in verses 118–119 of the text: "All who stray from your decrees you reject, for their delusions lead to nothing. All the wicked of the earth you discard like dross; therefore I love your statutes."

David, who lived his life holding onto the Word, declared in Psalm 1:6, "For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction." The Word of God is our greatest weapon and greatest power as we walk the path toward heaven. Among the weapons given to believers fighting against the devil in this world, we are told to "take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God" (Ephesians 6:17—Note: text mentions verse 12, but this is 6:17), as it is highly effective for both offense and defense. Therefore, Psalm 119:18–19 says: "Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law. I am a stranger on earth; do not hide your commands from me." No matter how difficult and trying things get, if we simply call upon the name of the Lord, He gives us His Word to grant us understanding and show us the path to take.

Today, even though it seems like the Word is overflowing like a flood more than ever before, we have paradoxically turned into an era of the most terrifying spiritual stagnation, where the majority of believers fail to actually live according to that Word.

If you want to save yourself and save our future generations, you must become a person of the Spirit and ensure that you "live according to the Word." I pray that all of you will look only to the Lord at all times and move forward by holding tightly to His Word.
