True Life Begins after the Resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:12-19)

1 Corinthians 15:19 “If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.”

If you look closely at a grassy field or vegetable garden, you can see all kinds of worms crawling around and gnawing

on grass or vegetables. They look disgusting. After a while, those worms spin thread, wrap their bodies, make cocoons,

and fall asleep. When the time comes, a small hole appears in the cocoon, and something squeezes its way out—that is

a butterfly. There are tens of thousands of species of butterflies around the world, and some people spend their whole

lives collecting indescribably colorful butterflies. For us human beings, the physical life of this world could be compared

to the life of a worm in relation to a butterfly. When the time comes, we fall asleep and are buried in the ground.

However, just as a butterfly emerges from a cocoon, the Bible says that we will be clothed with the resurrection body

and begin true life, the new life of eternal life. The life of this world, the worm, can be called the preparation process

for eternal life, the butterfly.

After the apostle Paul, who had been used in planting the church, left, false teachers entered the Corinthian church and

taught that while they acknowledged Christ’s resurrection, they could not believe that saints who died would rise again.

As a result, confusion arose concerning faith in the resurrection. Therefore, the apostle Paul sent a letter to correct the wrong teaching. In verse 14 of today’s passage, he said that if there is no resurrection of the dead, then even Jesus Christ could not have been raised. The problem is that many Christians in our age today also observe Christ’s Resurrection Sunday, but do not have certain faith in their own resurrection and only hold to it as doctrinal knowledge. If the resurrection of Jesus Christ and one’s own resurrection are not united, our human soul, meaning heart and thoughts, cannot escape from being an idol

worshiper that serves the flesh.

1. Every human being is born once, lives, and then dies. (The world)

Together with Adam, all people were created in the image of God, who is Spirit, and were created to live forever as God’s

representatives in paradise like Eden entrusted to each person, conquering the earth and ruling all things.

But because of Adam’s rebellion, all people became cut off from God and became people belonging to the flesh,

serving their own flesh as an idol. (The image of Adam) However, because God loved all of us, He established the new

covenant that He would save us through Christ. In a state of being sentenced to eternal punishment in hell, we were

given the opportunity to live physical life as a suspended execution period and receive pardon and restoration by holding

to Christ, the new covenant. That is why He said, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Romans 10:13)

Yet most people serve their visible flesh as an idol and live as slaves of the devil, the ruler of the world. However,

when by God’s grace a person hears, understands, and believes the gospel, the soul, meaning heart and thoughts,

that had belonged to the flesh comes to hold to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, and that person comes to live

a new life of eternal life not in their own name, but in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

2. Jesus Christ, who died and rose again in our place. (Salvation)

According to the Scriptures, Christ died for our sins, was buried, was buried in the ground for three days and nights

according to the Scriptures, and rose again. Jesus died in my place and desires to live in my place. Those who have not

received the risen Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and been born again have no real relationship with Jesus.

What is important is the fact that for those who have received the risen Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior,

the Holy Spirit comes upon them and governs their soul, meaning heart and thoughts. Through the Holy Spirit,

the life and rule of Christ come upon us. Therefore, Jesus Christ has come by the Holy Spirit “to those who know that

Jesus died in their place and have received Him as Lord.” This is the core of the gospel.

Saints who have received Christ as Lord and Savior and come to live a new eternal life in the Lord’s name also live

as one with the Lord for their appointed period and then face death. However, in today’s passage, the apostle Paul

describes those who lived in the name of Christ and died as those who have fallen asleep. “But Christ has indeed been

raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.” (1 Corinthians 15:20)

That is why the apostle Paul records, “For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.” (Verse 22)

As Romans 6:5 says, “For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him

in a resurrection like his,” whoever is united with Jesus Christ will come to the glory of resurrection.

3. Those who have received Jesus as Lord and Savior have become one with the Lord. (Eternal life)

The secret to participating in the reality of resurrection can be found in verse 22: “For as in Adam all die, so in Christ

all will be made alive.” Fully obtaining eternal life is resurrection. The gospel that saints transformed into the image of Christ must proclaim is, of course, the cross and resurrection, and the eternal homeland of the new heaven and new earth.

Becoming one with the risen Jesus is the only way to overcome the present world and death and live again.

Hebrews 11:35 records, “There were others who were tortured, refusing to be released so that they might gain an even

better resurrection.” In this way, the event of Christ’s resurrection is the core of the Christian gospel. We must proclaim

this gospel of resurrection.

Almost all people seek eternal happiness and satisfaction on the earth, meaning in the state of a worm in terms of

a butterfly, but the final news that reaches us is only news of death. Mankind’s true hope is only the faith of resurrection

through Jesus Christ. Only when we live focused on the Lord Jesus Christ, the firstfruits of resurrection, can life finally

experience true happiness and satisfaction.

Conclusion: The life of those who have become one with the risen Christ

Those who live with Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior are people for whom the “I” that represented the flesh is no longer

the first person, but the Lord Jesus has become the first person. They have become people who belong to the Spirit,

not people who belong to the flesh. They have become the image of Christ, living the life of Christ in the age and region to which they belong. (1 Corinthians 3:16) Paul, the disciples of Jesus, and the early Christians were able to boldly proclaim,

“Jesus’ resurrection! My resurrection!” because they received the risen Jesus as Lord and Savior and entered into a life of

being one with Him. Life on this earth is also not living in my own name, but living in the name of the risen Jesus,

so it is not a life that fears death, but a life that enjoys resurrection life.

Verse 19 of today’s passage says, “If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.”

The present world is the preparation period for true life that begins after the resurrection. The suffering and persecution

that saints receive on this earth do not end there; in the heavenly homeland, there is the reward of “a better resurrection.”

(Hebrews 11:35)

It says that in the resurrection, the glory we will enjoy will all be different. Just as the glory of the sun and moon are

different, and the glory of star differs from star, the glory at the time of resurrection will all be different.

Those who live in the Lord’s name on this earth and are preciously used for the work of salvation will receive great

glory at the resurrection.

Therefore, do not live deceived, clinging to something on this earth where we stay only briefly in order to receive re-creation. May you live looking forward to the true life of enjoying the glory of the eternal kingdom of heaven.
