Do Not Be Deceived by Lies Concerning the Second Coming (2 Thessalonians 2:1-12)

Do Not Be Deceived by Lies Concerning
the Second Coming
(2 Thessalonians 2:1-12)
Verse 3 “Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed,
the man doomed to destruction.”
According to the promise of Scripture, God became incarnate to save us, was crucified and died on the cross, rose again after three days,
appeared to His disciples for forty days and taught them about the kingdom of God, and then ascended from the Mount of Olives.
As He promised, Jesus sent the Holy Spirit, the Counselor, and is now governing the church age of the Acts of the Holy Spirit.
When He completes the work of salvation He has planned, He will return. The salvation we have received will be brought to completion
at the Lord’s second coming, when we will be clothed with resurrection bodies, participate in the heavenly wedding banquet, and receive
the new heaven and new earth as our eternal inheritance, like the Garden of Eden.
Therefore, we must see the greater picture of our salvation, hold to the Word given to us at every moment, and not be deceived
by the lies of darkness while living through this temporary period of preparation on earth.
1. The period from the ascension of the Lord Jesus to His second coming is the New Testament church age.
Jesus also spoke clearly about the timing of His second coming in Matthew 24:14. The New Testament church age, the Acts of the Holy Spirit
governed by the Spirit of the Lord, is the period during which all those appointed to receive salvation continue to be born, saved, sanctified,
and eventually fall asleep in death. Each person lives the limited life given to them while being re-created. However, churchgoers who have not
escaped from self-centeredness often misunderstand Jesus’ second coming. In a sense, when the lifespan granted to each person ends and
they fall asleep, the next day they experience may be regarded as the day of the Lord’s return. Yet it is not easy to understand
the timetable of the kingdom of God from a self-centered perspective.
Therefore, there were also many people in the Thessalonian church who could not escape their self-centered understanding of time and thought
that Jesus would return immediately. They failed to consider the future generations who would continue to be born, live their lives, and pass away.
Furthermore, because of the teachings of false teachers controlled by darkness, many came to believe that although Jesus had risen, human beings would not experience a resurrection like His. As a result, many people began claiming specific dates for the end based on self-centered predictions
of an imminent end. Verse 2 of today’s passage tells us not to become easily unsettled or alarmed by a prophecy, a spoken message, or a letter
supposedly from the apostles claiming that the day of the Lord has already come. According to 1 Thessalonians 5:1-2, “the day of the Lord will
come like a thief in the night.” Therefore, we who are in the Lord do not need to know the exact day or hour of the end of the earth.
What matters is that we remain watchful while enjoying the blessing of always being with the Lord Jesus as we await His second coming
at the end of the world.
2. The timing of Jesus’ second coming according to Scripture
The Lord renewed the covenant of Acts 1:1-8 for all believers living in the New Testament church age. Concerning His second coming,
Acts 1:7 says, “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority.” In verse 8, He instead promised
the filling of the Holy Spirit and the life of an evangelist. Verses 3-4 of today’s passage describe the circumstances that will occur as His second
coming draws near. Before that day comes, there will surely be a worldwide rebellion against the faith, and the man of lawlessness,
who will rule the world, will be revealed. Matthew 24:23-27 says that when Jesus returns, His coming will be visible to people throughout the world.
When Jesus first came in the flesh, He came quietly, but His second coming will not be quiet. On the day Jesus returns, the whole world will
experience tremendous shock and change. Those who have died in the Lord will rise again and be with Him. And believers who are still alive
will be transformed into glorious, imperishable bodies that will never die again, and they will welcome the Lord.
3. We must hold to the central conclusion of the new covenant and not be deceived.
The believers in Thessalonica addressed in today’s passage were experiencing deception concerning the second coming. Such deception primarily
targets churchgoers who claim to be believers and carry their lamps, but have not prepared the oil of God’s Word and live according to what
seems right in their own eyes. To avoid being deceived when we hear various claims about the Lord’s second coming, we must remember
verse 3 of today’s passage. What we need to know is that the day of the Lord will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness,
the man doomed to destruction, is revealed.
We must understand that the day of the Lord will not come before a worldwide rebellion associated with the appearance of the Antichrist,
who will rule a single world government. Therefore, if anyone presents various arguments claiming that the day of the Lord has already come,
we must recognize such claims as false teaching. God has appointed a restraining power so that the Antichrist will appear only at the time God
has determined. Regarding this, Revelation 20:1-3 describes an angel seizing Satan, binding him, and confining him in the Abyss.
Thus, although lesser figures resembling the Antichrist may arise, they operate only as leaders of heretical groups within particular regions or
nations before eventually disappearing. However, when God’s appointed time comes, the devil will be released from the Abyss.
Then the lawless one, the Antichrist who will rule the entire world, will appear.
Conclusion: Why God allows the Antichrist to appear at the appointed time
According to verse 8, it is for the judgment that will take place through the second coming of the Lord Jesus. In other words,
the appearance of the Antichrist indicates that the time of judgment is near. Those who lived their limited lives and then fell asleep have each
passed through the gateway of death, but those who remain alive until the Lord’s second coming will pass through the trials of tribulation and
the Antichrist. Furthermore, during the time of tribulation, the door for missions will open wide. God permits such tribulation
for the sake of missions. He also allows tribulation so that believers will stop looking to the world and live looking only to God.
The love of the truth refers to God’s love, through which He did not spare His one and only Son but gave Him up for sinners.
Those who perish are people who heard about this love through the gospel but refused to receive it and instead sided with the Antichrist.
Those who refuse to accept God’s love cannot receive salvation.
Those living at the time of the end of the world will also choose, by their own will, between Christ and the Antichrist. They will clearly choose
the path of salvation or destruction by their own will. For this reason, God does not prevent the Antichrist from appearing in the last days.
I bless you to remain in the Lord, not be deceived under any circumstances, and have victory.
