God's Stern Command to the Church (1 Timothy 5:17-25)
1 Timothy 5:21 records a stern command from heaven to the church: “I charge you, in the sight of God and Christ Jesus and the elect angels, to keep these instructions without partiality, and to do nothing out of favoritism.”
God's core command center, which is carrying out the work of salvation to save the entire world, is in each local church. If the command center of the church that God uses is shaken, the entire church and mission fields will inevitably be shaken together. Apostle Paul, having received this stern command from God, delivered it to Timothy, the senior pastor of the Ephesian church, wishing that he would faithfully carry out his pastoral ministry while maintaining good relationships with the church elders. First and foremost, he told Senior Pastor Timothy to “follow only the Lord’s guidance without partiality,” even stating, “I charge you in the sight of God and Christ Jesus and the elect angels.” This is because the church, as the command center, must not be shaken under any circumstances. What is the content of this stern command issued in the sight of God and Christ Jesus and the elect angels?
1. All Church Members Are to Particularly Respect and Serve Pastors and Elders
It says that elders who direct the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching the Word. This is because the church is the body united with the Lord who is the head, and it is the earthly temple most significantly used in the work of humanity's salvation. It is emphasized that overseeing the entire ministry of the church and proclaiming God's Word are the most important ministries. Furthermore, one should not be stingy with their compensation so that they can devote themselves to the ministry entrusted to them. In his letter to the Galatian church, Paul also says, "Nevertheless, the one who receives instruction in the word should share all good things with their instructor" (Galatians 6:6).
In the important ministries of the church, the workings of darkness are ceaseless. Therefore, it says that accusations against a pastor or elder should be accepted only on the testimony of two or three witnesses. There should be no acts of harming church leaders with mere rumors without evidence.
2. The Church Must Keep These Things Impartially, Without Any Partiality.
The 'partiality' mentioned here refers to views contrary to God's will, meaning "unfair and biased thoughts" or worldly value standards. Whether it's a left-leaning or right-leaning bias, a biased thought is partiality, and partiality is demonic and worldly. This is because even engaging in opposition movements regarding evil monarchies or slavery, if biased, cannot be used in the work of salvation. One must clearly understand that worldly power, ever since Adam was deceived and lost it to the devil, means the devil is the ruler of this world until the Lord Jesus Christ returns. The church's mission is not to build a paradise on this earth, but to be used by God in accomplishing the work of salvation in a world under the sway of demonic forces.
If believers, who have been appointed as royal priests and mediators between God and the world, are bound by the world's factions and partiality, they cannot even be used in God's good work; instead, they will inevitably be bound and captured by those factions. If you have partiality that unconditionally opposes certain groups or unconditionally supports others, it is evidence that you are still bound to the world.
Paul taught Timothy that he should be impartial and fair. All you believers must break free from the temptation of partiality. All people in the world are subject to the original sin of Genesis 3 and are people who desperately need Christ. Partiality is the most dangerous thing for believers.
3. Guard Yourself from Recklessness and Keep Yourself Pure.
What is 'recklessness' in verse 22? It refers to being in a self-centered state, not guided by the Word given by God, leading to "hastiness in words or actions, lacking the Lord's guidance." It is also mentioned not to hastily lay on hands and appoint church leaders or workers. If reckless, self-centered people who have not escaped their fleshly focus are appointed as church workers, they become prey or targets for the forces of darkness. Through them, church families are hurt and tempted, and the church's image is damaged. In any case, one must be careful not to get involved in the sins of others. As church leaders and believers, guarding oneself in the Lord is of paramount importance. A strong warning is given because if one cannot guard oneself, it will ultimately harm the church and lead to being bound by the world outside the church.
Our remaining journey after salvation is a long one, like a wilderness journey towards the heavenly city. The Lord Jesus said that He called us to be with Him, and to preach and have authority to drive out demons. Therefore, until we are called to heaven, we must also highly value our physical health. Our physical body enables mutual fellowship in relationships with others and is very important for the life of an evangelist on this earth.
For us, who are on the path to the heavenly city, verses 24-25 contain words of encouragement: “The sins of some are obvious, reaching the place of judgment ahead of them; the sins of others trail behind them. In the same way, good deeds are obvious, and even those that are not obvious cannot remain hidden forever” (1 Timothy 5:24-25). The devil acts as the ruler of this world, but he is under God’s absolute sovereignty. We should also not be discouraged if evangelism and good deeds are not immediately evident. Like a farmer who cultivates the land, sows seeds, and nurtures them, eventually, a harvest will be reaped. Revelation 3:21-22 says, “To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat down with my Father on his throne. Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”
