Self-Love and the Love of Money Is a Shortcut to Failure (1 Timothy 6:1–10)

The world—whether rich or poor—lives equally bound by greed and desire. Those who have wealth strive to gain more, becoming stressed by their ambitions. Those who lack wealth compare themselves, fall into despair, and struggle to grasp even a little more.

The desire to become rich and the love of money are unceasing cravings of people living in chaos and emptiness under original sin. The desire to be rich prevents a person from holding to Christ, the way to solve all problems. This is because the desire for wealth is not a hope for life in heaven but a pursuit of life in this world as its ultimate goal.

1. Humanity Was Originally a Supreme Being Without Lack

Adam, created in the image of God (as God’s dwelling), was a supreme being who, holding to the first covenant in the Garden of Eden, could rule over and subdue all things. However, instead of holding firmly to the covenant of creation, he held to the devil’s lie, broke the first covenant, rebelled against God, and fell under original sin.

As a result of original sin, all people together with Adam were cut off from God. Instead of loving God, they came to love themselves and money. They began to serve themselves and money as idols. A person created as God’s dwelling, if serving another master besides God, cannot help but be captured by the devil and enslaved by destiny. Being freed from this destiny is called salvation.

To be saved, first, we must know what humanity originally was, what the fundamental problem is, and who Christ—the only answer—is. Second, we must repent of the sin of playing master in God’s dwelling and receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, becoming a person of Christ. Third, we must believe that Christ, the Head, takes responsibility for and supplies all our needs, and we must live following Him.

Yet even many Christians, while saying they believe in Jesus Christ, still live as their own masters. Then they inevitably end up serving themselves and being ruled by money, which they think can meet their needs.

2. The Love of Money Is a Root of All Kinds of Evil

Why do people feel continual lack even when they have food and clothing? It is because they have little interest in their relationship with the Creator God and instead, as their own masters, love themselves and rely more on earthly things. Thus, they love money more than God. The clear truth is that we cannot serve both God and money.

1 Timothy 6:9–10 (NIV) says, “Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.” We are saved only by holding to Christ, the new covenant established by God. Yet in our fleshly state, we have been brainwashed by the lie that we must hold to money in order to live. Because that imprint remains, many show little interest in the gospel and instead follow other teachings for the sake of themselves and money. Many come to church for themselves and for money, but if they do not find the answer in the gospel, they eventually depart from the faith and pierce themselves with many sorrows.

3. Only When We Make the Lord Jesus Christ Our Master and Become One with Him Can We Be Content

If a person is not satisfied with current possessions and life, there is no guarantee that even with greater wealth he will give thanks to God and be content. If one cannot share with neighbors now, one will not share even after becoming wealthy. The same is true of tithing. Some mistakenly think they will tithe once they earn more money, but if they cannot do so now, they will be even less likely to do so later. The tithe is a confession of faith that all things belong to God.

If earning money is gradually distancing you from God, you are being deceived by the devil. If making money leaves no time to read Scripture or participate in worship, then you are exchanging eternal things for what will decay. We who believe must have our soul established in the Lord Jesus Christ. Then we can use everything entrusted to us for the good of God’s kingdom and truly be used by God. When we are used for His kingdom, we will enjoy even greater and more spiritual blessings without limit.

Conclusion: We Are Sojourners Who Live Briefly in This World

Life is like a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Remember clearly that we brought nothing into this world and can take nothing out of it.

We who believe have received salvation through the grace of the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ, God’s one and only Son. Therefore, do not cling to the things of this world, but pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, and gentleness, and fight the good fight of the faith. Money is only a tool. We are stewards of everything God has entrusted to us. What is required of stewards is faithfulness.

May you find the answer to life in the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ and keep all your focus fixed on the Lord. The richest person is the one who knows how to be content.

Contentment is the ability to give thanks in Jesus Christ in any circumstance. The only way to be content is to welcome into us the Owner of the universe. That One is Jesus. When Jesus dwells in us and we abide in Him, we become truly content.
