The Life of a Believer Who Leaves the Way of the World and Walks the Pilgrim’s Way to Heaven

Human beings were originally created as the image (house) of God. God, who created the whole universe and all things, said, “Then God said, ‘Let Us make mankind in Our image, in Our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.’ So God created mankind in His own image, in the image of God He created them; male and female He created them” (Genesis 1:26–27, NIV).

“The LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being” (Genesis 2:7, NIV) is the detailed account of the creation of human beings. God placed the first man in the Garden of Eden, had him manage and keep it, and commanded him to build paradise throughout the whole world. The first covenant (the creation covenant) given at that time is Genesis 2:16–17: “And the LORD God commanded the man, ‘You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but You must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when You eat from it You will certainly die’” (NIV). By keeping just this one command, he could do the work of God.

1. Original sin is breaking the first covenant so that God’s house became the devil’s house.

God originally created human beings as the living house (image) of the Creator God. As the image of God, humans, as long as they firmly held to the creation covenant (the first covenant), were the highest beings, able to rule and govern all things together with God. But deceived by the lies of the devil, who had been entrusted to be ruled over, they became their own masters, the “owners” of God’s house, and, seeking to become like God, broke the creation covenant by eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and rebelled. As a result of rebelling against God, they were cut off from God and sentenced to eternal punishment in hell.

After the ruler of creation broke the created order, the ground and all creation were cursed together and fell into suffering (Genesis 3:17). The work of judging between good and evil belongs to God, but each individual human began to judge good and evil for themselves, condemning one another and fighting to seize more for themselves. The human world thus fell into a cauldron of confusion and conflict.

God’s house is normal only when God Himself rules it, but the living house itself began to rule the house and act as its master. If you bought the best possible self‑driving car and it drove itself however it pleased regardless of its owner, what could you do with it? Yet the almighty God gave a new covenant (Christ) in order to re‑create broken humanity, God’s image, into God’s temple through Christ.

2. The life of a believer who is saved, becomes the body of Christ the Head, and rises to spiritual summit

Believers who have received new life and are born again live a life of growth in the Lord through the Word, prayer, and good works. God has allowed us a new life so that we may grow until we reach “the whole measure of the fullness of Christ,” who showed us the model. In this process of re‑creation, we grow as we take on and fulfill various offices in the church, and through this we grow even more.

The branches that are attached to the Lord, who is the true vine, are meant to grow day by day. But the branches in themselves have no power to grow. And yet, even though we have received new life and are saved, there are still many factors remaining in our inner being that have not yet escaped from original sin—the state in which “I” am my own master. In this state, even within the church it is easy to try to lord it over others from a fleshly sense of superiority. The result is that we disturb the church, and our own soul leaves Christ the Lord and becomes fleshly, like a withered branch. This is why, in the messages to the seven churches in Revelation 2–3, the promise “to the one who is victorious” is given in common.

Conclusion: The only One on whom a believer’s attention must be fixed is Christ.

The old self, who lived as its own master, was crucified and died in Christ. Yet those who are again deceived by the forces of darkness that have entered the church ignore Christ, whom they received as Lord, and live as if each member were their own master, seeking their own benefit.

In the church, which is God’s temple, believers must live as the body of the Lord Jesus Christ, who is the Head. If competition or division appears in the life of members of the same body, we must remember that we are becoming cancer cells in the body of Christ. To believe in Jesus means to have become one body with Christ; this is the “mystery of godliness,” having become a person of Christ. Jesus Christ, King of kings and Lord of lords, is the greatest in all the universe, and believers who are in Christ are also called great.

In a relationship where all are called great and precious, there can be no distinction as to who is greater. All are great and precious. This is what believers must live out in God’s house. We are to show and enjoy the fact that we are all, in the Lord, exceedingly great, precious, and equal.

In Christ, who is the Head of the church, all believers are members of the same body. Each is precious to the other. If the mystery of godliness is Christ, then for a believer to live in godliness means to live as one who has become one with Christ. Christ, the only truth, is everything in our lives. A life that begins with the truth and concludes with the truth is a life that walks the pilgrim’s way to heaven.
