A Life Enjoying and Witnessing Immanuel
The Word in 2 Timothy 3 gives a warning about the last days as well as a clear answer. The root cause of the 19 evil deeds recorded in today's passage is that humans, created in the image of God, are trapped in their destiny, bound by self-centeredness, money-centeredness, and success-centeredness due to original sin. If one ignores the Creator God and holds worldly-centered values, they become bound by a sense of comparison and live a hypocritical life. Humans who ignore God, who created and operates all things in the universe, are like factories that produce evil.
1. The Bible reveals the original human state and the fundamental problem.
In the beginning, God created all things in the universe for humans, made humans in the image of God, and entrusted them to rule over all things. Formed from the dust and having received God's breath to become a living soul, humans were beings who would enjoy God's glory and rule over all things forever, as long as they held onto the first covenant given by God. The first covenant was the covenant of creation, and Genesis 2:16-17 was given as its guide: "And the LORD God commanded the man, 'You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.'"
However, the devil's lie was delivered to the first human through the ancient serpent. It is Genesis 3:4-5. By holding onto the lie, "'You will not certainly die,' the serpent said to the woman. 'For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil,'" they broke God's first covenant and rebelled. At that moment, as Romans 3:23 says, "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God," they fell under original sin, were sentenced to eternal punishment in hell just as He said "you will certainly die," and were caught by the deceiving devil, becoming a house for the devil.
2. The New Covenant, Christ, Given to All Humans Fallen into Original Sin
To humans who fell into destruction after being deceived by the devil's lie, God established a new covenant (The Truth) that He would "save them through Christ." The Old Testament era was a time when people were saved by building an altar and offering blood sacrifices as a confession of faith in the new covenant. When the time came, He opened the New Testament era, and as the fulfillment of the new covenant, God came in the flesh as Christ and accomplished the entire work of salvation through the cross and resurrection. Christ, who was confessed through blood sacrifices, completed the work of salvation through His substitutionary death on the cross and His resurrection.
Although all people, along with Adam, fell into destruction by rebelling and breaking the first covenant after being deceived by the devil's lie, if they hold onto the new covenant, Christ, who is the truth, as their Lord and Savior (John 1:12), they receive pardon and restoration, becoming souls of God's Holy Spirit and gaining eternal life. Transitioning from being a soul of the devil to becoming a soul of God is called salvation. As a role model for Christians who have been saved and have become souls of God, Jesus lived a physical life in this world. If Christians hold onto the Word given by the Lord and live a life following the Lord, they will be healed, gain strength, and grow. Those who live with the Lord will always be joyful, will continually pray while enjoying being with God without ceasing, and will live a life giving thanks in all circumstances.
3. If you become self-centered and money-centered again, you enter the path of suffering.
The Apostle Paul said that "times of suffering, very difficult times" will come in the last days. Since the unbelieving world is already being dragged along, bound in the snare of self-centeredness under the rule of the devil, the prince of the world, they naturally live in anxiety and suffering, the opposite of peace. However, if the church that claims to hold onto the gospel becomes religious, and church members are deceived by the devil's lie, which is worldly knowledge, rather than the gospel, and change into being self-centered, serious problems arise. In Matthew 24:14 He said, "And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come," but self-centered church members end up being used to block the preaching of the gospel.
When a person's heart center (soul) becomes bound to self-centeredness, they fall into the state of the 19 sins of 2 Timothy 3. Through today's passage, the Lord strongly commands, "Have nothing to do with such people" (verse 5). If the souls (hearts, thoughts) of church members return to a self-centered state, the suffering that comes upon the world will be aggravated. The self-centered state is a state of opposing the truth (Jesus Christ). That is, it means one's soul does not belong on the side of truth but on the opposite side of truth. Self-centeredness is precisely the nature of the devil (John 8:44), the state of one who belongs to the devil. Therefore, they are those who fail the test; that is, they are those in whom Jesus Christ is not present (2 Corinthians 13:5). If they cannot escape self-centeredness, they will have no choice but to be dragged away by false teachers who dislike sound doctrine, tickle their itching ears, and captivate their hearts with myths (2 Timothy 4:3-4).
Even if it is a narrow and rugged path different from the way of the world, we must walk the heavenly path with the Lord. Until the Lord returns, because the prince of the world is Satan, it is said that "everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted." In the last days, we must be especially wary of a self-centered religious life. I hope you become one with Christ Jesus, focus on the Lord, enter into a life of following only the Lord, and begin a life of Immanuel.
