Numbers 4.
The Duties and Organization of the Tabernacle Life Guard
(Numbers 4:1-20)
Verse 3: "Count all the men from thirty to fifty years of age who come to serve in the work at the tent of meeting."
* A life guard (also known as household troops) is a military unit charged with protecting a high-ranking individual,
such as a monarch. (It is different from a lifeguard who is a rescuer who supervises the safety and rescue of swimmers,
surfers, and other water sports participants)
The tabernacle can be seen as a mobile field headquarters commanding the army of the LORD.
In chapter 4, God counted the Levites who could serve as the life guard of the tabernacle where God dwells,
people between 30 and 50 years old. For the regular soldiers, they counted the Israelite men over 20 years old
who could go to war. However, they set the Levites who would make up the life guard to be 30-50 years old.
This is because the tabernacle life guard had to be more mature than the regular soldiers.
In verses 1-33, the main duties assigned to the three families of the tribe of Levi are given.
1. The Mission Given to the Kohathites (1-19)
1)Kohath is the family to which Moses and Aaron belong.
2)Packaging and transporting the holy objects inside the sanctuary
3)The priests package the holy objects, and the Kohathites only carry and move them.
4)Today, we too must become people of Jesus Christ alone.
2. The Mission Given to the Gershonites and Merarites (21-33)
1)What the Gershonites will transport
2)In verses 29-33, the duties of the Merarites were given.
3)Eleazar the priest supervised the work entrusted to the Kohathites.
4)The pastor in charge of supervision must receive and supply the Word.
3. Counting the Three Families of the Levites as the Tabernacle Life Guard (34-49)
1)The Levites were counted as the tabernacle life guard from 30 to 50 years old.
2)Even the Levites were not allowed to touch or see the holiest objects of the tabernacle.
3)The life of a soldier of Christ must be thoroughly guided by the Holy Spirit.
4)The core of the LORD's ascension message is the promise of the Counselor, the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8).
Conclusion: The Ark of the Covenant Was the Core of the Tabernacle.
1)The packaging of the ark of the covenant, which symbolizes God's presence, was different from other holy objects.
2)Even during Israel's journey, the holy God is with them.
3)We must not take the work of serving the Lord’s Word lightly.
4)We must not try to judge the work of the church centered on ourselves.
The way to approach God is to hold onto the three things of today centered on the Word given in the Lord Jesus Christ
and go forward. Also, the principle of serving the church entrusted to us is that we must serve with one heart.
The work in this passage was something that the Gershonite, Kohathite, and Merarite unit members could not handle
unless they cooperated with one heart under the leadership of the priests. God tells us exactly what we need to do.
We must carry out the things that God wants to do through the church with one heart. For that, if we each hold onto
the three things of today and look to the Lord, the Lord will work through each of us.
We cannot accomplish God's will by just doing our own work.
I bless you to be good soldiers of Christ and to be victorious centered on the church.
