If You Are Bound by Wealth or Poverty, You Will Be Enslaved.
The essence of human corruption is that they want to live independently from God and become their own masters. The reason Adam and Eve violated the covenant of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil was the temptation of “I want to live as my own master from now on.” The result of giving in to the temptation, breaking the covenant of creation, and rebelling against God is that “I became my own master” and became bound to the needs of the flesh that previously had been freely supplied. Everything that had been supplied as free goods became something that could only be obtained through sweat, and the economic principle of the world was established in which the powerful increased their vested rights and exploited the sweat of others. This is the structure of rent income, labor exploitation, and wage exploitation. Then, when they become wealthy, they become arrogant and fall into a sense of superiority, and they ignore their poor neighbors.
The greatest characteristic of believers who have been saved by believing in the covenant of Christ established by God is that their wrong economic view, world view, and outlook on life change. In the past, before believing in Jesus, they thought that this visible world was everything, but when they are saved and their spiritual eyes are opened, they realize that this world is a temporary place and that there is an eternal world called “the kingdom of God.” Therefore, saved believers do not live centered on this world, but live centered on the kingdom of God.
1. When you accept Christ as your Lord, your perspective changes.
When a person who has lived a life centered on himself and money accepts Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and lives focusing on the Lord, all his perspectives change. His perspective changes because he sees the world and evaluates things through the eyes of the Lord, who is God. The world is divided into social classes based on wealth. The gap between the rich and the poor is serious everywhere in the world. The difference in wealth has become an important factor in determining people’s happiness and unhappiness. The world generally tends to look down on the poor. However the greater problem than other people’s judgment is that you see yourself as inferior. In this world that is obsessed with materialism, if you think of yourself as poor, you will feel frustrated and fall into defeatism. And if even the church, which has the mission to save and heal this world, is caught up in materialism rather than believing in the omnipotence of Christ, it is an extremely serious problem; and disasters and war come as a result.
2. Those who hold on to Christ instead of money will have their address changed to the throne of heaven.
Yes, poverty is inconvenient, but you mustn’t be bound by it and deceived and lose your self-esteem and fall into an inferiority complex. An inferiority complex is when you ignore yourself. The problem is when you blame your incompetence and become pessimistic about life. In order not to be bound by an inferiority complex, you must ask, “Who am I?” Those who accepted Christ as their Lord and Savior and live with Him do not belong to this world but to God. Even if your external circumstances may be poor from the world’s perspective, the essence of your changed status is that you have become a precious child of God. All needs are taken care of and provided by the Father God. Therefore, the life of a believer changes into a life of receiving what is provided with one hand and sharing with the less fortunate neighbors around him with the other hand. God provides much to those who share much. But are you in a state of poverty even for daily bread even though you’re a believer? That’s actually a very good state, because we can focus only on God, who is Christ. What greater blessing is there than the status of being God’s child and possessing heaven? The stability of life is not given by material wealth, but by enjoying being with the Lord.
3. If you are bound by wealth or poverty, you will naturally be enslaved.
In the Epistle of James, it says that the one who is rich should take pride in his low position. Taking pride about his low position means not to be arrogant with the wealth that has been granted to you for a while, but to always share and be humble. The more wealth you gain, the more humble you become and try to share. In fact, everything comes from God. We are always stewards. Everything belongs to the Lord. And we need a lot of material things to expand the kingdom of God. So money itself is not bad or evil.
In the world, the power of money seems great. That is why Jesus said in Matthew 6:24, “You cannot serve both God and money.” There are many dangerous factors that materialism, that is, money-centeredness, brings. Faith changes people, but money also changes people. It changes them for the worse. If you have some money, almost everything changes. Money is not simply a means of exchange. It has an influence that goes far beyond that and changes people. If you have a lot of money, you will naturally be put to the test of your spirit. As money increases, it becomes more and more difficult to keep faith. In an instant, material things take hold of your soul with a strong force and capture you (free will). Without realizing it, you place your safety in material things rather than in God. In the process, the most fearful test that comes to the rich is the desire to exalt themselves. The desire to rely on God disappears.
Also, if you are stuck in poverty, you may not be able to entrust your daily bread to the Lord and may end up living as a slave to earn a living. Since the Lord, the Lord of all things, is with you, you should seek your daily bread from the Lord and focus on the Lord. Serving God has nothing to do with money. Joseph enjoyed being with the Lord even while he was a slave and changed the people around him. The secret to not being obsessed with worldly things is self-sufficiency in Christ. I hope that you can live in true freedom by relying only on the Lord.
