The Purpose of Life, In Which One Comes Empty-Handed and Leaves Empty-Handed
The most fundamental education in life is learning: “Who am I? What am I here to do? What is the purpose of life?” The answer to these questions is found in Genesis 1–3, the very beginning of the Bible. To live without knowing these truths is ignorance indeed. To break free from ignorance, we must first, as spiritual beings, open our spiritual eyes. Then, we must also live in a way that helps those living in darkness open their eyes as well. We need to teach future generations and those around us, who are in spiritual darkness, “Why do we live? What should we seek? What is worth staking our lives on?” If we do not, they may be deceived by worldly academics promoting evolution or by shamans and meditators under the influence of evil spirits.
1. Every person lives their life as the one opportunity to receive salvation.
A commonly accepted principle of life is that we come with empty hands and leave with empty hands. Everything in this world has been given by the Creator God as free resources for mankind. However, when humanity rebelled against God and each person became their own master, falling into original sin, people began fighting and competing to possess more than others. As a result of original sin, people strive to accumulate things of this world and play the role of master, becoming obsessed and bound by 1) things good for food, 2) things pleasing to the eye, and 3) things desirable for gaining wisdom. Those who are deceived by and cling to the things of this world and what is in it soon drift farther from life’s true purpose, become entangled in spiritual problems, and face growing emotional and physical troubles. As a result of original sin—committed by all humanity in Adam—we are cut off from God, spiritually dead, and destined for eternal punishment in hell. Yet, because God loved us, He established a covenant for our salvation through Christ. Every human, created in Adam, lives at least once with the chance to receive salvation in Christ. All desires in this fleeting world quickly vanish like fog, but those who hold firmly to the covenant of Christ receive pardon and the gift of eternal life. Eternal life begins the moment one is born again as God’s child by embracing the covenant of Christ.
2. Those who receive eternal life grow in the new life they have found.
When you receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, the life of bondage to original sin—where you were your own master—comes to an end, and a new life of eternal life begins. As you become a person of Christ and grow centered on the church, God’s Word increasingly shapes your language, thoughts, disposition, and character, molding you into a spiritual disciple. Then, you can nurture and raise spiritual children as a spiritual parent. The spiritually matured parent is one who becomes united with God from the beginning and whose entire perspective is transformed.
Christians are called to live as the light and salt of a decaying world. Wherever they go and whomever they meet, those who live as people of Christ, considering others, are honored in return. Yet, anyone who claims the name of Christ while hating their brother still lives in darkness. Light is love; darkness is hatred or indifference. The Christian in Christ (in the light) is told not to trust in the world or anything in it. Because the things of the world easily become Satan’s bait, and God the Father abundantly provides all we truly need. The Bible declares, “If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them.” True gospel Christianity is fundamentally different from other religions, which exist for the sake of “me and us.” Their purpose is not eternal life or heaven, but greater prosperity and happiness in this world.
3. Growth in eternal life leads to becoming a spiritual parent.
The most certain thing in life is death, which comes to all without exception. Yet since we don’t know when or how it will come, most people live as if they’ll never die—and miss their chance for salvation. People who obsess over gaining more from this world depart without ever understanding salvation. We must depart this world having gained eternal life; if we die stubbornly clinging to a life where we remain our own master, the next place is inevitably the gates of hell. The person who helps others enter the path of salvation before death is an evangelist. Even after entering salvation, those who remain spiritually immature and whiny do so because their hearts are divided. When your heart is taken by the world, you end up under Satan’s control and can never be truly happy. But when Jesus Christ becomes the center of your life, you live in God’s abundant grace. When you help those who are spiritual infants to hold only to Christ, they grow to be spiritual disciples.
Churches need many spiritual parents. The goal for those who have become people of Christ is, as Ephesians 4:13 says, “until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.” We are called to join the ranks of spiritual parents—growing from the stage of spiritual childhood to youth, and then to fatherhood. To enter the world of spiritual maturity, of becoming a spiritual parent, is to have your eyes opened. When your eyes are opened, you no longer struggle over trivial and fleeting things. To have your eyes opened is to see eternity. Evangelism is having your eyes opened to God’s plan in all matters and events. Indeed, evangelism is not merely “doing,” but “seeing.” May the eyes of your heart be opened to understand and see God’s ultimate purpose for your life.
